Weighted Keys vs Hammer Action

Are "Scaled Hammer Action" keyboards as good as "Weighted" keyboards on electric pianos? (my son is just starting piano lessons and I keep hearing weighted keys are the only way to go).

Thanks!

ANSWER

Hi, Tracy--

The hammer action pianos are actually a step up from the weighted key pianos. The weighted keys are meant to simulate the action of an upright piano, while the hammer action keys are meant to simulate the action of a grand piano.

Bear in mind that neither of these options is equal to a good acoustic piano, but I think that either of them would probably be fine for your son to begin lessons.

If he becomes more interested in advanced playing, you will still want to invest in a good acoustic piano.
