Playing guitar chords in alternate tuning follow-up question

I also noticed that he (Nick Jonas) is playing most of those notes on the d string, from what I can tell from the videos; does that change anything?

Makes no sense to me--I know of no alternate tuning that would work that way. If you send a link, I will try to look at the video.
