(How) Does MIDI to USB work (Electronic Drums)?

I am trying to use the MIDI function on my drumset, but I don't have a MIDI interface. I researched this, and I found out that I can buy a cable that has a MIDI receptor and USB 2.0 (or 3.0) end.

My question is can this cable be used to connect my drumset to a device (say, a laptop) directly? And how would this work? Like, would I need to download additional drivers, or could I just plug it in, download a DAW, and start jamming?

My drumset is rather old —— Yamaha DTX 500 Electronic Drums (2012).
