What are Sharps and Flats?

by Jessie
(Colorado)

OK so i really don't understand the flat and sharps stuff like that. May you please give me
more info?

ANSWER

Hi, Jessie--

A SHARP is 1/2 step UP. A FLAT is 1/2 step DOWN.

UP is toward the high notes on the keyboard.
DOWN is toward the low notes.

A HALF STEP is the distance from one kehy to the very next key.

For example, if you are on C and you go up to the very next key (in this case, a black key), that note is C# C SHARP).

If you are on E and you go down to the very next key, that note is Eb (E FLAT).

Hope this helps!

Best Wishes,
Lynne
