Starting a song when sitting in

What is the proper way to start a song when sitting in with a band ? thanks---

ANSWER

There are no hard and fast rules, but I suppose it depends on the song. If the guitar starts alone, there is not need to count the song off.

If the drums start at the same time as the rest of the band, you will want to count off in the correct tempo.

You could always ask the band what they prefer.
