Music Question--Does a Sharp last for the Whole Measure?

by Connie
(Fruitland Park, FL)

I haven't played the piano since I was a child. I just bought a piece of music and am trying to remember...

If a piece is in the key of C and a sharp is introduced in a measure, do you continue to play the sharp until you come to a natural sign or is the sharp just for the note in that measure?

Thanks

ANSWER

Hi, Connie--

Welcome back to the piano! The sharp (called an "accidental") lasts for only the measure in which it appears.
