Ludwig Tension Rods

Hello, I would like to chase the threads and swivel nuts on my '64 ludwigs. I believe they are 12-24 UNC.
If I buy a tap and die that are 12-24, will this work? Do I need to measure the dia's. of the tension rod and swivel nut. Thanks, Mark
