I have a chord question....What Is This Chord?

by Richard Forbes
(Ontario )

I've been trying to figure out the name of this chord,
or at least give it a name that doesn't fill half the lyrics sheet when I write it out.

201203 is the chord.

I know that B/A is 201202, and 021203 is B7#5
so is my mystery chord B7#5/A or am I totally off base?

ANSWER

Hi, Richard--

Whenever you use "../..", the note after the slash has to be the bottom note of the chord. If you want this to be a "B" chord, there are 2 choices:

B7#5/F# (F# is the lowest notes in the chord)

OR

B7add b13/F# (The "g" is a flat 6th which becomes the flatted 13th when the 7th is present in the chord.

The second one makes more sense to me since the chord already has a 5th (F#). Calling the G a sharp 5th means that the chord has TWO DIFFERENT 5THS-- Not a good way to write chord names because it is confusing.

Hope this helps!
Lynne
