First Fret Buzzes

by David
(Fond du Lac, WI, USA)

My guitar sounds normal on all my frets except for the first fret. When I play it it makes a sound like when you don't hold the fret down hard. I know it's not just me not holding it down hard because I have tried holding one down at a time really hard and it still doesn't work. How do I fix it.

ANSWER

Hi, David--

If it is ALL of the strings that don't sound good,
check and see if the first fret is worn or if the nut is worn.

If it is just one string, then I would suspect that the groove in the nut for that string is worn.

It might be a good idea to take it in to a local repair person. A diagnosis like this is very inexpensive and then you will know for sure.
