Buzz in open string

I have a buzz in 1st string even when played open. Is this a string, stringing, or guitar problem?

ANSWER

Hi, herm--

It depends on the guitar, but generally a buzz on an open string means that the string is too close to some fret. It may also be that the groove for that string in the nut is worn down.

My advice is to take the guitar to a qualified repair person--it probably won't cost anything for them to look at it and identify the problem.
