Yamaha G231

by Rhett North
(Farmersville, Texas, USA)

I pick this guitar up in a pawn shop in OKC. It is in excellent condition but appears to have a few miles on it. Do you have an idea of what it could be worth?

ANSWER

Hi, Rhett--

This model is not listed in the Blue Book. I did find several for sale on the internet for around $150.

G231
by: Anonymous

I got mine back in 78, it has traveled the world with me while I was in the military. Still in great shape. It has only needed minor repairs, other than that, it is a great guitar.

OMG The Yamaha G231
by: Nickdeuce

This guitar actually sounds like two people are playing instead of one. The harmonics are impeccable. And the strings original, right down to the nylon string, mother of pearl tuning keys. Best Christmas gift ever. Nickdeuce

Lovin' the G!!!
by: Anonymous

Got my G 231 in 1980, chip board case, some idjit put steel strings on it. Cleaned it up, put those red lable strings (the ones with Segovia on the package) and have never looked back.
I play lite classical and finger picking stuff on it. Not loving it for hum-n-strum but for all else. It is my Christmas Song guitar every year. Have played wedding songs on it. Have traveled back and forth across the country with it and have never had a regret. Neck is stable. Bridge hasnt pulled up. Finish is still glossy beautiful. I cannot understand why these still sell for $75-150. Worth sooo much more! Best deal in nylon string guitars EVER!

Best guitar for the Price, Period!
by: Anonymous

When I saw this guitar for $80 in a guitar shop, and saw the bottom edge quite battered, i didnt expect much... But when i played the first few notes I could not believe my ears! Bottom end is amazing, and the sound really rings. I played an $800 one in the same store that could not compare.I filed the bridge down as far as it would go, and the action is great. hardly ever goes out of tune either. I will Never sell this guitar. ever :)

finding out date
by: Colby

In order to know what year and date your guitar was manufactured. Look in the sound hole at the neck there is a number there. go here http://www.yamaha.com/apps/guitararchives/guitarserial.htm and enter it... if you know what DECADE your guitar was made... you will know exactly when.

Hope this helps...mine G-231 that I just picked up from a pawn shop was November 25, 1979.... unit number: 476.

Pretty interesting stuff....

Classy Classical
by: ggreen05

I got one from my sister a few years back. This guitar has a great bottom end, giving it a sound that is very distinctive from any other classical I've played. If you can get past the chunky-feeling neck and have the action set comfortably, this is a fine instrument for any skill level.

re:Yamaha G-231
by: Linda

I found this information while researching this guitar. These guitars were only made between 1978 and 1980. They sold then for $150. The back and sides are mahogany. The top is spruce. Neck is nato and the fretboard is rosewood. I purchased mine in 2007, making it at least 27 years old. I also paid $150 for mine, and am very happy with it.In my opinion, if you get it for less, you are fortunate (depending on it's condition)-if you pay up to $300, you are still getting a good instrument.(I'd stop at $325-$350.) Lovely mellow sound. Should do nicely beginner through intermediate.
