YAMAHA FG-300

by Jerry
(Jacksboro, Tn. United States)

This guitar was handed down to me by my uncle. He purchased the guitar new just before I was born or a little after, or so I was told. The only number I can find on it is 902440 which I assume is the serial number. Everything is still original including the flowered pick guard an an adjustable bridge which is rather unique. I have never seen one like it before. The finish is in good condition except for some scratches on the back. He wore a big belt buckle to church for this is where he played it. Time period would be late 60's or early 70's.

ANSWER

Hi, Jerry--

It would be fun to see a picture of your guitar!

The Blue Book does not list the FG series models separately and there is really no reliable way to identify Yamaha guitars from serial numbers because for some reason Yamaha "recycles" the serial numbers every 10 years.

OK--all that said, I was able to piece together some info for you--

Here is the general stuff from the Blue Book:

"Yamaha has produced several different models of the FG series over the years. Because there were so many and information is scarse on them now it is difficult to put them into individual model listings. Hopefully the following information will be of some help. The FG-140, FG-180, and the FG-300 were the original 6-string jumbo guitars introduced in 1969."

So now we know that you were right in your estimation of "late 60's or early 70's".

I found this website with a discussion of the guitar including the prices that some people have paid:

Harmony Central

As you will see, the monetary value at this point is not that much. I think that right now people who collect guitars (for big $) are into Martin and Gibson (and a little bit Fender). But the thing is EVERYONE who owns this guitar thinks that this is a WONDERFUL guitar. Apparently your Uncle thought so too.

IMHO--most of the time true value is NOT in the $.
Have you played it?

Best Wishes!

Lynne

Replacement parts
by: Malc

I have this guitar, red label and all, bought new in UK in 1968(?) The only change I made was in fitting sealed Schaller machine heads which remain fully working after 40 years!
As everybody says, lovely sounding guitar.
I haven't had a problem with the pickguard falling off. I gigged it around until about 1976, and it still keeps going.
Problem now is getting spares for it. One of the saddles is worn in the groove and gives me a rattle on that string (I like a very low action).
Yamaha UK couldn't come up with any spares at all, so I am faced with getting a luthier to make replica saddles as I couldn't trust myself to drill the adjustment screw holes correctly!

FG-300
by: Mark

I bought my FG300 SN 890840 Red Label new in 1972 or 73 I think - just before my last Med cruise in the Navy. A few years ago I had to replace the pick guard because it warped and cracked. I also had the adjustable bridge replaced with a fixed bridge. I still have the old bridge if anyone is still looking for replacement parts. I love the guitar and it seems to play as well as the top line guitars I have played at Guitar Center. email is marhec@mchsi.com

My FG Needs A Good Home
by: Gerry

I have a Yamaha FG300. Serial #40404. Made in Japan. I can provide photos on request.
Due to age and physical limitations, I can no longer play this instrument adequately.
It is almost like new. All original.
The sound is still robust but has mellowed with age. I would sell it on E-bay, but I would prefer someone who is seeking out this particular guitar and can appreciate it. I can be e-mailed at "busterlanghout@sbcglobal.net".

strings
by: Philip John Lewin

I don't believe there is such a thing as the universally "correct" strings. Your playing style and comfort level are unique to you. Thicker "medium" strings give a broader tone, but can wear out your hand quicker if you play a lot. The FG-300 can certainly handle the additional tension from mediums. (You may want to set the truss rod slightly differently for mediums than for lights).

Brands truly are different. I tend to use Martins, but I know many who hate Martin strings.

Elixers are "in" because of their durability and long life characteristics, but I find they have a "greasy" feel that is uncomfortable for me. My daughter swears by them. A new string in the long life category that just came out (and costs a lot) is the "Martin Lifespan SP". I acquired a few sets as samples and gave some to various friends. Initial feedback is that they are the best sounding and playing strings from people who normally use Martin lights.

If you like the sound and feel of the guitar with a particular brand and thickness, stay with them!

About the flower pick guard of a FG-300
by: Philip John Lewin

As many people here know, a Yamaha FG-300 (Red Label) is an amazing guitar at any price. I have one which, unfortunately, had the pick guard removed and destroyed by a moron who thought he could convert it to a left hand instrument. Sigh.

Recently I was on one of the major internet classified sites and saw a Diastone 12 String Guitar. Guess what! It had the same flowered pick guard. Of course, I bought it. While it has some issues that, so far, do not impede the tone or playability, it sounds great. It was made in Japan around 1972. The fellow who sold it to me had a lot of Japanese guitars and was quite knowledgeable about them. He believed that it (and probably the fg-300 Red labels) would have been made in in the Matsumoku factory. (See www.Matsumoku.org)

In any case, the Diastone is giving my Gretch 12 string a run for its money!

i have a yamaha fg300 yellow label sn# 21013267. yamahas website has a serial number generator that will identify your guitar. mine was made in 1972 and was one of hte last from the gakki plant before they moved to taiwan. ive had it for about 25 years bought it at a pawn shop for 50$. they are the best sounding guitars made. the only issues are with the original pickguards warping. 25 yrs ago i didnt like the flowered pickguard and threw it away. recently i replaced it some tortoise shell pickguard material. i cant believe how rare they are and how loyal their owners are. i have only seen one on ebay and it was for parts. ive had friends who play martins and gibsons who are amazed at he sound of this lamost 40 yr old guitar. i am always looking for other old nippon gakki fgs they are the best.

I just bought a fg 300. serial# is 734667...i think mine is the first one sold in America too...it has to be because it's a lower # than yours, right? I am joking of course but i really like mine. Some here have said they aren't selling for much but i disagree..Most in good shape are getting upwards of a grand to the person who knows their guitars.Of course you may find a cheaper one but better grab it up because they are very much desired and not many around in good consition.

FG-12-300
by: Dave M

I just inherited a Yamaha FG-12-300 guitar with s/n 40528. I can't find any info as to how old this guitar might be. I know my father-in-law bought it in Japan when he was stationed there. Inside label is black, Label reads as follows:

Yamaha
FG-12-300
Nippon Gakki CO LTD
10.1 Nakazawa Hamamatsu Shizuoka Japan

Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

My Grandmother had given my Father hers and last year it was stolen. I would love to be able to replace this guitar for my dad.

Thanks,

Anybody got a lower S/N???
by: Bruce Henness

I've got an FG300 S/N 767942. Anybody got a lower number? Info is scarce on these but I believe this one to be the first one sold at retail in the US. It may not be the lowest number but this one was the first one sold. I'm also looking for a bridge and a new pickguard. The one on my guitar has fried and died taking out the metal bridge, the case liner and anything around it with it. If you have one like this I would avoid storing it in the case as mine appears to have generated some heat and outgassed some fairly corrosive vapor. It was mint 2 years ago when I last looked. Now I'm looking at some serious repair expense. Guess I've also incurred some serious repair expense myself...that's what time does to ya.

FG-300
by: Nosmo

I bought my FG-300 red label in 1970 when I was in high school. I gigged with it all through the '70's and also recorded with it over the past 39 years. This is my favorite guitar (I have 5). I love it. The crystal clear highs and rich lows are terrific and the action has been thin and perfect - with no adjustment - since 1970! I would never sell it and plan to give it to my nephew when I kick the bucket.

I have owned my FG-300 since 1970 when I bought it as a HS grad present for myself. Cost $200 with hardshell case. I gigged for 10 years with it, recorded for many more years, and love the sound. Action is as perect today as it was 39 years ago. Terrifc guitar.
