YAMAHA FG-300
by Jerry
(Jacksboro, Tn. United States)
This guitar was handed down to me by my uncle. He purchased the guitar new just before I was born or a little after, or so I was told. The only number I can find on it is 902440 which I assume is the serial number. Everything is still original including the flowered pick guard an an adjustable bridge which is rather unique. I have never seen one like it before. The finish is in good condition except for some scratches on the back. He wore a big belt buckle to church for this is where he played it. Time period would be late 60's or early 70's.

Hi, Jerry--
It would be fun to see a picture of your guitar!
The Blue Book does not list the FG series models separately and there is really no reliable way to identify Yamaha guitars from serial numbers because for some reason Yamaha "recycles" the serial numbers every 10 years.
OK--all that said, I was able to piece together some info for you--
Here is the general stuff from the Blue Book:
"Yamaha has produced several different models of the FG series over the years. Because there were so many and information is scarse on them now it is difficult to put them into individual model listings. Hopefully the following information will be of some help. The FG-140, FG-180, and the FG-300 were the original 6-string jumbo guitars introduced in 1969."
So now we know that you were right in your estimation of "late 60's or early 70's".
I found this website with a discussion of the guitar including the prices that some people have paid:
Harmony Central
As you will see, the monetary value at this point is not that much. I think that right now people who collect guitars (for big $) are into Martin and Gibson (and a little bit Fender). But the thing is EVERYONE who owns this guitar thinks that this is a WONDERFUL guitar. Apparently your Uncle thought so too.
IMHO--most of the time true value is NOT in the $.
Have you played it?
Best Wishes!
