Yamaha FG260--2 serial numbers?

by Rob
(Canada)

My guitar is a yamaha fg260 i dont know the year i,ve got two serial numbers that dont make sense to me can you help ? they are #41120331 and #0634433 thx Rob

ANSWER

Hi, Rob--

I am sorry that I don't know the answer regarding the 2 serial numbers. The FG series is somewhat confusing.

The Blue Book says this:

FG-260
- 12-string configuration, dreadnought-style body, spruce top, mahogany back and sides, round soundhole with multi-ring rosette, black body binding, mahogany neck, 14/20-fret rosewood fingerboard with dot inlays, slotted headstock with six-per-side open-style nickel-plated tuners and plastic buttons, rosewood bridge, tortoise pickguard, available in Natural finish, 25 in. scale, mfg. 1972-73.

Excellent $200 - 250
Average $120 - 150

Maybe soem of our readers can help with the serial number problem.

Lynne

Decoding Yamaha FG serial numbers
by: Anonymous

You have to look up both the serial number and the model number to figure out what year your guitar was made. The serial number is the 8-digit number in this case: 41120331

Punch that into this yamaha web page here: http://www.yamaha.com/apps/guitararchives/guitarserial.htm and you'll get back the following information:
Date: November 20
Year(s): 1964, 1974, 1984, 1994, or 2004
Unit #: 331

Now if you take the FG260 and punch it in on this yamaha web page here: http://www.yamaha.com/apps/guitararchives/guitarchive2.asp
First click "Acoustic Guitars", then punch in the FG260, you will get:

Year(s) Sold: 1974-1977
Original MSRP(US$): $251.00
Top: Spruce
Back / Sides: Mahogany
Neck: African Mahogany
Fingerboard: Rosewood
Bridge: Rosewood
Color(s): Natural
String Length: 637mm
Notes: 12 String - Slot Head

So your guitar was made Nov 20 1974

FG260 Serial Number
by: Gary Bivens

The number on the end of the neck is the correct serial number.

Yamaha repeats their serial numbers every ten years, so, if you purchased yours new within the ten year timeframe you will be able to know exactly when it was manufactured.

You can go to the Yamaha website and get the date of manufacture of your guitar. This site is:

http://www.yamaha.com/yamahavgn/CDA/Catalog/Catalog_GSMFCX/0,6357,CTID=221350&CNTYP=&VNM=LIVE&AFLG=Y,00.html

There is a quicklink to the left of the webpage to search for the serial number.

If your guitar was manufactured in Japan, then it would be one of the earlier FG260's, and if it were manufactured in Taiwan, then one of the later ones.

I think that starting about 1971 they were manufactured in Taiwan, and up to 1971...in Japan.

I hope this helps.

I also have a Yamaha FG260
by: Anonymous

My FG260 also has 2 serial numbers. They are 0401003 found inside the body at the top of the outer shell and 3100164 found at the end of the neck where it is joined to the body on the inside. Don't know what the two mean.
