Yamaha FG-180

by Suzanne
(Florida)

This guitar is approximately 39 to 40 years old. My Aunt purchased it new from a music store in downtown Jacksonville, FL. (I think it was Paulus Music Store).

It has a red label inside with:

Yamaha Guitar
FG-180
Nippon Gakki

The serial number inside is stamped as:
786575
There is a "Made in Japan"
sticker on the back of the neck.

It is in very good condition but does have a few nicks on the sides and back.

ANSWER

Hi, Suzanne--

Yamaha has produced several different models of the FG series over the years. The FG-140, FG-180, and the FG-300 were the original 6-string jumbo guitars introduced in 1969.

The Blue Book says:

These guitars never sold for too much money, and because of this aren´t very collectible today. Most of these guitars were played on because they may have been a guitarist's first instrument. Most guitars are worth between $50-$350 depending on the condition and features.

Best Wishes!

Lynne

Red label no Gaki!
by: bob the muleskinner

I honestly don't care, but I've had a red label FG180 since 1974, I swapped it for a Hofner Senator I couldn't play it it was so high and I practically learned on the FG. It buzzed like crazy, it was made in May 1972, it doesn't have the T in front of the serial number, and it has a solid back, but it doesn't say Nisan Gaki!I used to put bits of paper under the 4th string at the nut to stop it buzzing! Anyways, I'd loaned it out for a couple of years, and when I got it back recently I paid £92 for the top 4 frets to be renewed and a graphite nut fitted and the bridge re-profiled. I can't stop playing the darn thing. I play country sort of thumb/fingerpicking and everyone is remarking how much better I'm playing. I've paid a lot of money for guitars over the years and this beauty has been stood in the corner most of the time!
