Yamaha FG1200j

I RECENTLY BOUGHT THIS ITEM.I HAVE NO IDEA OF PRICE.

ANSWER

Hello--

This is what the Blue Book says about the FG models:

"There are a good 50 different models, and each one has a different feature. These guitars never sold for too much money, and because of this aren´t very collectible today. Most of these gutiars were played on because they may have been a guitarists first instrument. Most guitars are worth between $50-$250 depending on the condition and features."

My fg1200j was bought in 1978 at a music show in New York by Schneider's music in Augusta Ga. My fellow bandmember bought a Yamaha with wooden inlay. three piece back. Istill have mine and its better than almost every guitar I've ever played. There are no serial numbers and no marks to identify a date of production. Bought at trade show. Had frets redone around 2002 and sealed with nitro to protect.e-mail is bdgranade@atlanticbb.net

offer for sale
by: Anonymous

I have just placed a Black Label made in Japan one in David Duggleby's auction house at Scarborough Nth. Yorkshire. If you are interested please contact Jamie on 01723 507111 email auctions@davidduggleby site www.davidduggleby.com. It is in very good condition and a very rare offer for sale as you know if you are aware of this very sort after model with only 40 hand made ones ever being built. The reason for the sale is becaused it belong to my brother who passed away 12 months ago and was one of his treasured possesions.

FG-1200J
by: Anonymous

I am really surprised to see so many comments about this guitar. I too bought mine back in the mid-seventies from "Take Five" Shaftesbury Avenue, London / UK. I remember playing a couple of Gibsons and Martin guitars, I wasn't too impressed with their sound. Then I was told about this "handmade" guitar from Yamaha, which in my ears those days didn't sound sound as good as owning a Gibson or a Martin. However, when I began to play it, this FG 1200J just put everything else in its shadow!!!

My FG1200J
by: Speed

I bought one new around '75. As I recall it had a price tag of close to $1,000.

I have had a few other guitars (Guild 12 string, for example), but this is my favorite.

I have tried on and off to find more about this model, but it's hard to find.

Original Yam brochures: incl prices
by: Hugo

http://www.t-shiga.com/sub7-5-1-11.htm

Check out the above link for an original 1974 Yamaha "black label" brochure featuring the FG-1200J. Note the price! It is 120,000 yen .... slightly meaningless in absolute terms but note the price of a classic red label FG-180: 18,000 yen. When Yamaha says top of the range, they mean it. This is a class guitar.

For classic Yam fans, here's another original 1969 "red label" brochure

I don't think the BlueBook folks know this model
by: Kevin

I too have an extremely nice ~ Yamaha FG1200J circa 1971. It is the loudest and best sounding 12 string I've ever heard or played. This is NOT the laminate top cheap guitar most music stores carried in the 70's. I accuired it in 1973 or 74. It appears handmade and plays great.

It has an ebony fingerboard and bridge, abalone inlay, a solid spruce top, jacaranda sides and a three piece back with a tiger stripe maple center and bookmatched jacaranda sides. I've been in the retail music biz since 1973 and have never seen another like it. This guitar also came with a leather tag inside stamped with the Yamaha name and 3 tuning fork logo with a handwritten serial#.

I would be interested to hear if others have or are aware of this model, if it is as rare as I suspect, and I am trying to ascertain its value.

I'll keep an eye on this page for comments. Thank you for any input.

Hi, Kevin--

The Blue Book mentions that this model was introduced in 1971, but provides no pricing.

This is a unique instrument
by: Anonymous

I also have an FG1200J and it is a very unique instrument. I always have to qualify it when I tell people that I have a Yamaha. Yamaha makes great workhorse guitars; but this one is a true thoroughbred.

I just worked on an FG1200J
by: Steve Beckwith

Hi folks, I build guitars and also repair them. I just finished doing some fretwork and a set-up on a friend's FG1200J. I'll tell you flat out it's one of the finest guitars I've played. It sounds great and the action was outstanding when he gave it to me to set-up but he wanted it even lower (he's actually a drummer).

I was in a Guitar Center this past Saturday and I played quite a few Martins and Taylors and a few Gibsons. This guitar was better than any of them. Of course GC seems to keep strings on their instruments way to long...

It does play as well and sound as good as my 1956 D-18. Contrasting it to the instruments I've built the sound quality is comprehible but different (as with all guitars). However, it's action is better than how I currently set-up my instruments.

yamaha fg 1200j
by: oldfingerz

If you have this model guitar then it's a very rare find these days. The FG 1200j is one of the high end handmade models made for a short period in the mid 1970s it's all solid wood with a spruce top, jacaranda back and sides and ebony fingerboard.I have one myself from new and it's a great instrument.Should be quite valuable the last one I saw for sale was £1500 a few years ago.
