vox country western acoustic guitar
by: bruce wilson

I own a Vox Country Western acoustic...What an amazing instrument, clunky and extremely heavy with bits of original wood putty and overglue showing inside and out, an enormous peg head with plastic laminate covering, funky old plastic tuning pegs, the foot-long three-point laminate pickguard, a slotted-screw adjustable aluminum bridge and the thickest covering of varnish probably ever applied to any musical instrument...The forty-year-old once-ivory plastic binding has turned a poisonous green color, the glassy varnish covering has dozens of parallel longitudinal age cracks, and the fret end edges, never properly dressed, were a real pain until I smoothed them. The neck is bolted on with four huge stainless (original) visible #1 phillips machine screws washered with a single chromed plate. This is one formidable looking musical instrument. It mostly sounds and plays like a dream, though, has incredible fast action without buzzing, almost like an electric guitar (thanks to the zero fret and adjustable bridge) stays in tune forever, and has better lows, mids and sustain than the Gibson CW. The highs are somewhat muffled, though, compared to the Gibson. Anyway, I just love it...what a guitar, gives off wonderful rain-barrel booms and springy twangs. If the heavy varnish and the huge pickguard were gone, it would probably have better treble quality as well, but it is way too old and funky-cool-looking to ever modify. I swear the original varnish is at least a sixteenth of an inch thick. if you ever see one, get it. They actually retailed for $160 in the late sixtie's, which was a ton of money back then, probably the equivalent of $750 or more today.
