Using Tape on Drum Heads

Why do some people put black tape in the center of their drum heads?

Hi, evandam11--

Tape is sometimes used a a means of muffling the sound of a drum. There are many other ways to achieve this result, including using special heads and manufactured muffling rings. For more information, please see:
