Turquoise 60's Gibson EB3 bass guitar

by john howard
(canton, ohio)

Turquoise 60's Gibson EB3

Turquoise 60's Gibson EB3

Greetings from Canton,Ohio

My friend's girlfriend, wound up with her deceased
father's bass guitar.

I've been playing for 50 years, and I have never
seen a Gibson EB3 in a turquoise finish. I can't help
but think this would make it more rare and valuable
than the standard cherry or ivory models.

The serial number is 333288. Everything is original
and all solder connections are undisturbed.

It has the original plush lined chipboard case
with the brass Gibson logo on the flap inside.

Any estimate you could offer would be greatly
appreciated.

Very Respectfully,
PH1(A/C) John W. Howard

ANSWER

Hi, John--

I was unable to find ANY information indicating that the EB3 was manufactured in this color (OR that ANY Gibson bass was made during that time period with a turquoise finish. The only mention of it was YOUR ad on Craigslist.

Here is the general Blue Book info:

EB-3
- SG-style double sharp cutaway mahogany body, mahogany neck, 20-fret rosewood fingerboard with pearl dot inlays, black headstock overlay with pearl crown and logo inlay, two-per-side Kluson tuners, bar bridge, laminated black pickguard with finger rest, metal hand rest, one black plastic covered (1961-62) or metal covered (1962-1979) full-size humbucker (neck) and one metal covered small humbucker (bridge) pickups, four knobs (two v, two tone), four-way rotary pickup switch, string mute, nickel hardware, available in Cherry (most common), Ebony (rare, only 10 mfg. 1973), Natural (rare), Walnut (common), or White (rare, approx. 70 mfg. 1976-79) finish, 30.5 in. scale, mfg. 1961-1979.

**The serial number indicates that this guitar was made at the Kalamazoo Plant, USA in 1966.

Here are the Blue Book values for that year:

1965-1969
Mint $3,000
Exc.+ $2,400
Exc. $1,950
Avg.+ $1,600
Avg. $1,300
General $1,000

Sorry I could not be of more help regarding the finish.

Lynne

Keep it
by: Anonymous

More than likely this is a vintage mod... meaning when it was purchased the purchaser had it customized to their own specs. The idea is by no means new. That would explain the undisturbed look of the soldering and such. If It were up to me I would never part with it.

(if you want to part from it). I have two 67's in Cherry...real close to mint, (play them too)...and this would be a nice addition to the family.
