Takamine tf 70

Takamine tf 70

Takamine tf 70

I'm trying to find out the year it was made. I bought from a friend at work -funky little guitar and fun to play.

ANSWER

Hi, Ernie--

This guitar is not listed in the Blue Book, probably because it is a "lawsuit era" guitar.

Most early Takamine models were copies of popular American designs - especially several Martin models. Not only are many of these guitars similar in design, but the logo was a near match other than the name.

In the late 1970s, Takamine, along with many other Japanese manufacturers, were sued by a few American guitar builders, including Martin, for trademark infringement. Takamine agreed to stop using Martin's logo on their guitars and came up with their own.

I was able to find one of these for sale online for $500.00.

Mansfield Model: TF70 acoustic
by: Tim Colleran

Hi Ernie & Lynne,
Curiously I have a Mansfield Model: TF70 acoustic six string that was a gift to my wife in 1971. It looks very much like your Takamine TF70.
I believe that the TF70 was manufactured in 1970 and was a "knock-off" of the popular Martin 000-18, variations of which were produced from the 30's to the 70's and the present.(See: Martin gallery, folkwaymusic.com)
I could not re-locate the post, but I read that Peate's Music store, located on Mansfield Street in Montreal were kind enough to confirm that Mansfield used to have their guitars made by Hoshino-Gakki in the 70's. They also made and distributed the Ibanez brand. I also read that Hoshino-Gakki was more involved in design and distribution. The associated Fuji-Gen factory may actually have made the guitars. Perhaps your guitar is an early model Takamine had built by one of the Japanese factories.
I hope you find this info valuable.
The Mansfield TF70 is 38 3/8? total length.
Top of tuning head to body is 20 3/8?.
Body is 18? long by 11 1/4? wide across the upper chamber and 14 5/8? across the lower chamber.
The sound hole is 3 3/4? diameter.
The bridge is 7? from the bottom of the body.
The differences from the Martin 000-18 are: tuning machines are attached, adjustable steel reinforced neck and the height adjustable bridge.
