Takamine F 450S

by KatiAnn
(Washington)

This is original and I have the case. I don't recall the original price.

The Serial Number 74081970 is stamped inside on the base of the neck.

What might have been its original price?

What is its' value today?

ANSWER

Hi, KatiAnn--

The Blue Book does not list this guitar. In the late 1970s, Takamine, along with many other Japanese manufacturers, were sued by a few American guitar builders, including Martin, for trademark infringement. Guitars from this era are known to most guitar collectors as the pre-lawsuit era, and many of these instruments have become extremely collectible today.

This particular guitar is a copy of a Martin D-41. My guess is that the lawsuit situation is the reason that the guitar is not listed in the Blue Book.

I was able to find out that it was manufactured in 1974. Indications are that the guitar is very rarely found and that owners are hanging on to them due to the quality. Every person who own one or has owned one testifies to their excellence.

I was not able to find pricing information. The guitar is not even mentioned on Takamine's website. My advice would be to find a knowledgeable dealer of vintage guitars and ask for information about pricing.

Sorry I could not be of more help, but this guitar is kind of ma "special case".

Lynne

'74 Takamine 340
by: Anonymous

I too have a "lawsuit" Takamine dreadnought that I bought in late 1974. Mine says: OCT 1974 and 340 on bracing just inside the soundhole--there's no letter preceding the model number. I remember paying $175 for it in '74 at a shop in downtown Seattle--I think it was Mulholland Music. Anyway, it still plays beautifully!

It seems to be a popular guitar!
by: Saxman

I just came across one too. A family member of mine was given the guitar by his client Mr. Barcus Berry so that he could learn how to play. He never took it up so the guitar just sat there in the closet for many years until one day he offered it to me. The bridge needed repair and i was able to get it done by a guy who was highly recommended. He was familiar with this model and said that it was worth $750 to $850 AS IS. I was shocked to hear it. It is a beautiful sounding guitar and looks great with all the Abalone inlays. I'm considering to have a pick up installed but I may just keep it as is due to the value. If I do decide to install a pick up what do you suggest?

I'm a new Takamine Fan!

ANSWER

LOL why not try a Barcus Berry pickup? (Sorry--couldn't resist)

1974 F-450s
by: Anonymous

I have a '74 F-450s. Original owner, case, and yes it's a wonderful guitar. My baby...

I thought the wood was jacaranda (spelling) but Brazilian rosewood. Anyway, split back, and the D-41 look. Still plays wonderful.

Corrected info?
by: Anonymous

OK,

It's the tuners that are gold plated - I skipped the tuner part when writing that last note.

The wood on the back and sides is correctly spelled Jabaranda - a type of South American Rosewood.

The fingerboard is also Rosewood over a solid Spruce neck with the abalone inlay.

The body style is Dreadnaught.

That is all I have found so far. Still have no idea on value.

HELP If You Can!

More info?
by: KatiAnn

OK - So maybe someone out there has an idea what this may be worth. It has the gold plated , there is abalone inlay on the neck, around the front and around the sound hole. There is ivory inlay around both edges of the sides. The back is bookmatched Rosewood. The sides Jabarandi.
Maybe this added info will help.
