Strata Fender Esquire

by Jody
(Arizona)

It looks to be in AWESOME condition. There is a stamp that says L74 1964. It is white on black. There are no scratches on the instrument that I can see. The case is form fitting black or blue velvet. It seems to be in great condition also. The outside of the case has a couple of small dings in it. I don't know thing one about guitars so any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

ANSWER

Hi, Jody--

I am confused--is this a Strata or a Fender guitar? The 1964 Fender Esquire is quite valuable.

The Strata guitars were made in England, but not before the early 80's.

Does it say Strata or Fender on the guitar?

I had planned on posting pics
by: Jody

I was going to post some pic. I did alot of research last night trying to decide if I should buy this guitar. I know nothing about them but it was at a garage sale for $150. I was incorrect it wasn't black it was a dark blue in a blue velvet case. I decided this morning to go back to the garage sale and buy it. The plan was to bring it home and take some pics and do some more research. On the way home I stopped by a music shop owned by a very nice man to speak to him about it. He bought it from me. It turns out it was of interest to vintage guitar buffs. I will say that I paid $150 for it. I sold it for much more then that and decided the person that sold it to me had no clue what he had sold me so I stopped and gave him an addition $150.

I greatly appreciate the info I got from this site.

***Hi, Jody--

Glad we could help. The world needs more honest people like you! (Still wish we had a pic)

it has all 3 "names" or words on it
by: Anonymous

It actually says Strat esquire fender in script writing and the words are in that order.

***The word "Strat" is an entirely different animal from the word "Strata". If, in fact, it is a Fender Esquire, you have a valuable guitar. Here is a description of the Esquire:

ESQUIRE (U.S. MFG.)
- single cutaway ash body, black pickguard, bolt-on maple neck, 21-fret maple fingerboard with black dot inlay, strings through bridge with cover, six-on-one-side tuners, chrome hardware, single coil pickup, two knobs (v, tone), two-position switch, controls mounted on metal plate, available in Butterscotch Blonde, Sunburst, or Custom Color finishes, mfg. 1950-1970.

Note that it does not mention a black finish. The guitar could, however, have been refinished. If this sounds like your guitar, here are the Blue Book values:

1963-1964
Mint $12,000
Exc.+ $9,500
Exc. $7,500
Avg.+ $6,000
Avg. $4,500
General $3,500

If you could send a picture, I would be able to tell if it IS an Esquire. In any case, we would like to see a pic!
