Stability Rings on Cymbals

by Michael
(Russell KS)

I just got my set and im a new drummer..what are the black rings on the cymbals used for and when should i replace them..also there are black rings inside my shells and they fell off so now there is just some adhesive on the inside of my drum and the black ring just bounces around when i hit it now what should i do about that??

ANSWER

Hi, Michael--

The black rings on the cymbals are like washers. They provide stability to the cymbal. Replace them when they are worn and the cymbal becomes wobbly.

The black foam ring inside your drums is probably for the purpose of muffling the drums. You could take the heads off and reattach the rings, or you could remove them altogether and invest in some "Remo's" or a similar muffling product.
