Single Bass Drumming

by Jim Grace
(Michigan)

Hi,

I am having difficulty in 4 consecutive 16th note bass drum hits.

Im a single bass drummer and have typically practiced my bass by starting out with doubles at all positions of a measure, then triples, then triplets in the same fashion. Then quads. I am really having troubles with my quads even at low pace on my metronome.

Any practice tips?

Thanks for you help,

Jim Grace

ANSWER

Hi, Jim--

You may be able to improve your speed somewhat by experimenting with the manner in which you are using your foot. It will be faster if you are using your heel up and then just bouncing with your toes.

The problem is that you will be able to achieve a limited speed with one bass drum pedal. I think that it would be well worth it to invest in a good double bass pedal. Most drummers are using them.

This is the one I use:

Tama Iron Cobra Power Glide Double Kick Drum Pedal with Cobra Coil Standard

And I have this one on the set that my students use:

Tama HP200TW Iron Cobra Jr. Twin Pedal with Footplate Standard

Best Wishes,
Lynne
