Safe to remove Drum Wraps?

If I remove the plastic coating from my drum shells, how will that affect the sound? I really like the look of wood but I can't afford new drums. Also every drum I see for sale is painted or wrapped anyway.
So if I remove the plastic, how will that affect the sound?

Hi, Dave--

You can remove the wraps without an effect on the sound, but you will need to protect the shells some way. You can either paint them or try a clear coat.
