Martin HD-28 1980 serial number 427534

by Jeff
(Orlando, FL)

Eldery widow friend is asking me to sell her son's Martin. He only had it for 3 months in 1981 before he was killed in an accident. Almost never played since then, in mint condition. She is the original owner of the guitar, having bought it new as a gift for him in January 1981. I don't want to sell it for less than it's worth since she really needs the money now and hates to part with it. She even gave me the original insurance appraisal certificate of authenticity from Mandolin Brothers in Staten Island. Thanks!

ANSWER

Hi, Jeff--

The serial number indicates a 1980 manufacture date. Here is the Blue Book general info:

HD-28 Herringbone
- similar to the D-28, except has scalloped bracing, bold herringbone purfling/top inlay, zigzag back purfling, and a tortoise color pickguard, mfg. 1976-present.

The pricing info:

1980-1989
Excellent $1,800 - 2,200
Average $1,250 - 1,500

Best Wishes,
Lynne
