Marching Snare Drum Sizes--Which is Best?

by Andrew
(Charleston SC, USA)

I am looking at marching snare drums and I'm wondering, is there any difference in quality and sound if i get a 13"x11" snare compared to a 14"x12" snare?

ANSWER

Hi, Andrew--

I think it is a matter of preference. The larger drum is going to have a deeper sound while the smaller drum will have a more crisp sound. With the larger drum, the sound will carry a bit better.

You might also want to consider YOUR size. Depending on that, you might find the smaller drum more comfortable.

All in all, either of the two sizes is suitable. Why not go to a local dealer and try out both. One or the other is likely to stand out to you as more pleasing.
