Mandolin Guitar

by Charlie
(Chicago)

I love the sound of an acoustic guitar. I own a Martin D15. However, I don't like the bulkiness of it and I tend to get carpal tunnel. I thought if I had a smaller instrument it might help. I love the look and size of the mandolin but don't love the twangy high-pitched sound as opposed to the deepness of the acoustic guitar. Is there any instrument that would be shaped more like a mandolin but sound more like a guitar?

Hi, Charlie--

There are mandolin-guitars available. They are, however, tuned one octave higher that a guitar, so you are still going to get that higher sound.

My advice would be to look for acoustic guitars with narrower necks. Another thing you might want to consider is a thin body acoustic, which might help because your left hand would have a shorter distance to reach the neck.
