"Howard Guitars"

by Rick White
(Quakertown,PA)

I have an old..probably mid 60"s guitar..The brand name is "Howard"..single pickup,single cutaway..light as a feather..do you know anything about it,or what its worth..in very good condition..Thank you!

ANSWER

Hi, Rick--

Here is what the Blue Book says:

Instruments previously produced in Japan, circa 1960s.
Instruments under the Japanese-produced Howard trademark thus encountered have been bolt-on neck Fender Strat copies of decent quality. Retail prices in the late 1960s ranged between $79 to $119.

I did some research but could find no more mention of these guitars.

Sorry I could not be of more help.

Lynne

My first electric
by: Joey Paradis

I'd been playing my dad's mahogany Martin, a small guitar with horrible action, until I wrote to Santa in maybe '64 or '65 to please bring me a pickup for it. Instead I got a guitar of my own that Christmas, a Howard electric. I still have a picture of myself, taken that Christmas day, wearing an Indian costume while posing with this guitar! It was a single pickup solid body, red with a white pick guard, black along the edges, and what appears to be an over-size head, all six tuners on the top, one volume, one tone knob, jack out the front. It might as well have been a Gretsch. One doesn't have to be a virtuoso to know when the action is crummy. This guitar played great! The neck was true, the tone was limited but okay when played through the Sears Silvertone. Hey, I was a kid with little experience. I later made many a recording using this Howard as the lead instrument. I wish I still had it!

Howard Bass weighed as much as me!!!
by: Bill B

My first electric guitar in '70 was a used Howard Strat copy (sunburst), paid $20, plugged into a Harmony 400A amp ..... thought I was Hendrix!!! A decent guitar at that time.

About the same time I bought a used Howard Precision Bass copy (sunburst) for $30 and a used Vox AC-50 bass amp. That was the heaviest, inefficient block of wood I ever owned!! Even so, practiced like heck and joined a band, upgraded to Gibson EB2D Hollowbody bass and Sunn amp with dual 2-12"reflex cabinets.

Howard guitars

I bought a Howard bass guitar at a pawn shop in 1966 which I still own. It still has the tiny "made in Japan" sticker on the back of the neck and the Howard decal on the front. The guitar itself is red on the front, blending out nicely to black around the edges and black on the back. In 1967 I bought a new Howard electric guitar to match it, same color. I sold it to buy my girlfriend an engagement ring when I was 18. I'm 61 now and don't have the guitar but I still have her. My bass is very heavy. I'm surprised to hear you guys say they're light. It would be interesting to know how many are out there.

Howard Guitar

I traded in a Danelectro Convertible for a sea foam green Howard in the mid '60's. It had 3 pups and a trem bar. It looked cool, but I soon ditched it for my first acoustic - a Yamaha.

Howard Guitar
by: Rev Mr Black

I owned one of these guitars back in the mid 60's when i was a teen. It came as a guitar and amp combo. Surprisingly it was true all the way down the neck. Unfortunately, I loaned it to a guy who
disappeared from the area. Met up with him some 20 years later to discover that he used it to play jazz in the Detroit area for an 8 year period.

I really missed that axe and it would have fit quite nicely in my collection of 33 that I have now have.

Howard guitars

Howard was an import line of guitars, basses, drums and keyboards. I once owned a white Howard bass with two P-90 style pickups. Not the best nor worst sounding instrument but very lightweight. It was vaguely Precision styled. A friend of mine had a red sparkle set of drums which were pretty decent. They were sold from the mid 60's to maybe 1970
