How to determine Year and Model of Martin Guitars

by Georgine
(Nazareth)

I have a Martin Guitar that was my grandfather's. I cannot find the make and model numbers. Where are they located.

Thank you,
Georgine

ANSWER

Hi, Georgine--

Every Martin guitar made in 1898 and later, has a serial number inside the guitar. This number can be used to determine the exact year of manufacture. Martin guitar serial numbers start at 8000 in 1898 because Martin estimated they made 8000 instruments before 1898.

On round hole martin guitars, the serial and model numbers are stamped on the neck block inside the instrument. The number can be seen by looking inside the sound hole. Look at an angle towards the neck. All f-hole Martin archtops have their serial and model numbers stamped on the inside center of the backstripe.

The serial number will be the long number and the number below it (something like D-20 or 00018) is the model number.

Hope this helps!
Lynne

1973 D-18 with original hard case
by: Itsbeachdon

This guitar is in near perfect condition with original hard case. The neck size is smaller than normal for this guitar, making it a rare find.

Value of a Martin d-28
by: Brent

Hi there my name is Brent my grandfather passed away left me his D-28 martin guitar I think my grandmother told me he had the neck of the guitar replaced once the from is a little scratched up from him strumming it however even at that I was told its more valuable if you don't get it refinished and keep it as original as possible so that's what i am doing the serial # is 122830 on the inside . It is a six string guitar can anybody give me an estimated value on it from good condition to average to even poor condition I'd say its in average condition for an original guitar without having it refinished. please help. Thank You , Brent

ANSWER

Hi, Brent--

The serial number indicates that your guitar was made in early 1952.

Here are the Blue Book values:

1950-1959
Excellent $9,500 - 12,000
Average $6,250 - 7,500

martin guitar no serial number
by: Georgine

Thanks. It only says "CF Martin $ Co, New York" inside the guitar. It is a six string, round hole arch neck guitar. Any idea what kind it is, when it was make or possible value?

Hi, Georgine--

If you send a picture, I will try to find out.

Lynne
