About This Song

"Higher Ground" first first appeared on Stevie Wonder's 1973 album "Innervisions". It was released in 1989 by the Red Hot Chili Peppers on their album "Mother's Milk". The song reached number eleven on U.S. Rock charts.

About Chad Smith

Chad Smith became the drummer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1988. He was born in Minnesota and grew up in Illinois.

Smith has recorded he also records with many other musicians including The Dixie Chicks, Kid Rock, and George Clinton.

Chad Uses a Pearl Reference Drum Kit with Sabian cymbals and Remo drum heads.

About This Tab

The basis of this song is an eighth note "swing" groove where the eights notes are played as triplets. The drum part is surprisingly simple compared to the outlandish funkiness of the bass line.

About the most complicated thing that happens during the Verses and the Chorus is triplets between the Snare drum and Bass drum.

The most interesting part of this tab comes during the Outro where, followed by a measure of 2/4 time, the tempo switches from 144 to 160 BPM and the eights become straight eights. Then the pattern becomes quarter notes on the Hi Hat with 16th notes on the Bass drum on the second and fourth beats.

This tab will be a lot of fun for almost any drummer. The skills required can be easily learned by following the sheet music and playing against the funky bass part on the song is exhilarating.
