Gurian S3M

by Robert
(Buffalo, NY)

Serial #B1596
Original Owner, very good condition.

ANSWER

Hi, Robert--

The Gurian models are not listed separately in the Blue Book. Here is the general info:

"Instruments previously built in New York City, NY between 1965 and 1982.
Luthier Michael Gurian built quality classical and steel string acoustic guitars, as well as being a major American wood supplier. He debuted his classical designs in 1965 and offered steel string designs four years later. In 1971, at the encouragement of vintage retailer Matt Umanov, Gurian designed a cutaway model that later became a regular part of the product line.
In the early 1970s, Gurian moved his production facilities to Hinsdale, New Hampshire. Gurian´s four story mill building housed a large band saw (for slabbing logs), two resaws (cutting slabs to dimension), and various planers. During this time period, Gurian imported ebony, rosewood, mansonia, and spruce; his U.S. sources supplied walnut, maple, and other woods. Disaster struck in 1979, as a fire consumed their current stock of guitars as well as tooling and machinery. Gurian rebuilt by later that year and continued producing guitars until 1982.
Michael Gurian may have stopped offering guitars in 1982, but he still continues to be a major presence in the guitar building industry. Gurian serves as a consultant in guitar design, and his company offers guitar fittings (such as bridge pins) and supplies, custom built marquetry, and guitar-building tools based on his designs Sources: The Alembic Report (Guitar Player magazine) and Tom Wheeler, American Guitars.

Used prices on Gurian guitars typically fall between $1,500 and $2,000 in excellent condition."

Some refinements
by: new2horses

If your instrument is truly serial number B1596 (as opposed to maybe D1596??), then it was probably built in 1973, and is the latest serial number I know of from Gurian's Grand Street, NYC factory. All Gurians were professional quality instruments, and current economic conditions notwithstanding, prices have overall been climbing for these excellent instruments. Depending on condition, an original, playable S3M will typically go in the $1300 - $2000 range, with superb examples (like the one that was recently at Matt Umanov's shop in NYC) commanding even higher prices. They're worth that and more. The only factors limiting the price of instruments is their relative obscurity to novice guitarists and their neck size, which with a nut ordinarily measuring 1-5/8" is too thin for some modern players.
