Gretsch Chet Atkins "Tennessean" model: 6119

by Greg Pasillas
(Inver Grove Heights, MN)

From:

Greg Pasillas, Inver Grove Heights, MN

Greetings,

I have recently acquired this vintage instrument:

Descr.: Gretsch, Model: 6119 "Chet Atkins Tennessean"
Circa: (estimated), mid to late 60's

The serial number is: 3955

The major issues or areas of concern regarding condition:
I want to have the "fit" and stability of the neck joint checked.

The edge binding is deteriorating.
It's been speculated that the back and sides were refinished or re-sealed (laquer? varnish?, etc.) and whatever was used is degrading the binding) The front has not been touched (the painted on F holes are intact). So, I need to get some input about what could be done to resolve it.

The electronics seem to be functional. However, there is a switch (near the two volume controls) which we speculate may be a "mute" switch, that has separated from the "toggle" portion of the switch, but seems to be "broken" in the "on" position(?)

It was missing the bridge, so I have ordered a replacement, and tuning machines (not original vintage, but new replacement, in the same or similar style).

So, with the replacement parts I have ordered, it should come into playing condition soon.

ANSWER

Hi, Greg--

I am not sure what you are asking, but here is the Blue Book general info:

CHET ATKINS TENNESSEAN MODEL 6119/7655

- single round cutaway hollow maple body, double-bound arched top, two open f-holes, single-bound back, maple neck, 22-fret ebony fingerboard with pearl thumbnail inlay, plain headstock with three-per-side tuners, adj. bar bridge, Bigsby vibrato tailpiece, single exposed Filter'Tron pickup, raised black pickguard with Chet Atkins' signpost signature/logo, single volume knob on upper treble bout, single three-way tone switch on upper bass bout, chrome hardware, available in Cherry, Dark Cherry Stain, Mahogany, or Walnut finish, 16 in. body width, 2-2.25 in. body depth, 24.5 in. scale, mfg. 1958-1980.

Here is the approximate pricing info:

Mint $2,800
Exc.+ $2,300
Exc. $1,900
Avg.+ $1,600
Avg. $1,300
General $1,100

The Blue Book values are based on ORIGINAL condition without repairs or refinishing. The value is greatly diminished when repairs have been made, especially refinishing.

chet atkins, tennessean..model 7655
by: Jack

I OWN THE LISTED GUITAR, IT IS LIKE NEW...I HAVE TROUBLE DETERMINING HOW TH SWITCHES FUNCTION.(There are two switches...a master volume knob, two knobs..I assume these are tone controls, but not sure..I have considered changing the pickups to a hotter pickup..any suggestions on how the switches work, and should I change the pickups.
The serial number suggest the guitar was made in the 1970's.

Thanks

Mine is in mint condition -- really!
by: DLP

So, as of today, June 8th, 2010, what would the value be? It has barely been played and no repairs have been done or have been needed.

Oh, and is the 6119 the same as the 7655?

Thanks,
