Gretsch "Beast" 8217

by Alan Johnson
(Pennsylvania)

Don't know much about this guitar, Made in USA, 2-PU, Serial#: 9-0278. Any thought on value?

Hi, Alan--

Here is all of the info from the Blue Book:

BST-1000/BST-1500 Double Humbucker Model 7617/8211/8215/8217
- similar to the BST-1000, except has two humbucker pickups, and a three-way pickup selector switch, available in Brown (Model 7617/8215/8217) or Red (Model 8211) finish, mfg. 1979-1981.

Mint $550
Exc.+ $425
Exc.$350
Avg.+ $300
Avg. $250
General $200

Lynne
The same model designation (BST-1000) was used on the two pickup version as well as the single pickup model. In 1981, some models were numbered BST-1500 (Model 8217).

Guitar Case
by: JG

My Beast's guitar case is falling apart- not the case itself but the buckles/hardware on the outside. Is it worth to restore? Thanks.

Bst 1500
by: Andrew

I worked at a car dealership for a while, and a guy traded in a car and left a gretch beast. It was wrecked, he had sanded off the laquer (Looks pretty cool natural though) has orignal hardware, all I had to do was replace the trim nut and get an intonation. ($60) The guy at the store offered me $1000 for it, its not mint, has a maybe 2 knicks on it. Has original case, orignal documentation, even the warranty card that he never mailed in. I think I got a pretty good deal. I just wish I knew how to play because I LOVE the sound it makes, even when it was out of tune.

Some Serial Info
by: em jay

8200 came out 79-81. First two digits before the dash is month. After dash year is the first digit followed by position in line for making that piece...
10-9699 is Oct '79 position 699.
Interesting is "3/4" neck-shorter with full 24 frets!!!
LUV MINE
Personally think in good shape should est. for more, Pushed $200 new with case. Wierd marketing, found mine in 79, NEW in a record not instrument store back then!

Question?
by: Mdrider2

I've had my guitar for 30 years, bought it new. Just pulled it back out and found Model# 8216 inside the cavity. Is that a color designation?. The serial # is 2-0162. Also when i bought it, i modified it. Not knowing that it had Dimarzios already, i put one in the bridge position with a coil tap switch. I'm guessing that it reduces the value. But the new Dimarzio is still 30 years old also and i have the original case. I have forgotten what she sounds like. Thanks...

Gretsch Beast for Sale
by: John

I just came across one of these in a music store in St. Augustine. Florida. They are asking $495 for it with the case.

This was my first guitar, and I still have mine. I haven't used it in years though. Mostly into Strats and acoustic now. I can't wait to plug it in again though!

If you're interested in the one for sale, contact Grampa's Music at (904) 819-5797. They had it as of 1/21/10. Good luck!

$500 mint?
by: David Cheney

I have a 8217 serial No. 10-0224, and I am rebuilding. This has to be a very rare guitar, and it a beauty to play, I find it hard to believe that a mint version would only bring $500?
