great affordable acoustic electric guitar

Hi,

I started playing guitar about 6 months ago and the guitar that I have is a VERY old and beat up, classical nylon string guitar. I can't even tell what brand it is. I would very much like to upgrade to a better sounding, steel string, electric/acoustic guitar that is not over 300 dollars for Christmas. I have looked on Guitarcenter.com, but I cannot make a decision. Please help me out! I mostly like playing rock and nice acoustic songs. Thanks.
