Gibson SG
I have an opportunity to purchase an old Gibson sg. It has 2 humbuckers (white) with no covers on them. (is that original? Perhaps the covers have been removed? I understand that the tuners have been replaced. It is mahogany and has a whammy bar. I have only seen a few pics of the guitar. The serial # is 506148. I would appreciate a quick response as seller is eager to sell.
ANSWER
Hi--
The serial number indicates that the guitar was made at the Kalamazoo Plant, USA in 1965-1967.
Here is the Blue Book General info:
(note that it had COVERED Humbuckers)
SG STANDARD (MFG. 1963-1970) - double sharp cutaway mahogany body, layered black pickguard, one piece mahogany neck, 22-fret bound rosewood fingerboard with pearl trapezoid inlay, tune-o-matic bridge/side-pull vibrato, blackface peghead with pearl logo inlay, 3-per-side tuners, nickel hardware, 2 covered humbucker pickups, 2 volume/2 tone controls, 3-position switch, available in Cherry finish, approx. 16,700 mfg. 1963-1970.
To determine the right pricing, you will need to look at the pickguard:
1965 Small Pickguard Mint $16,500 Exc.+$13,000 Exc. $10,500 Avg+ $8,500 Avg. $7,000 General $5,500
1966-1967 Large Pickguard $7,500 $6,000 $5,000 $4,000 $3,250 $2,500
