Gibson SG and 12 string Ovation

by Dances with Horses
(Texas)

Gibson S-G

Gibson S-G

We have a Gibson S-G serial # 7571862....7 digits....I am wondering if the last digit might be a factory second # as I can not find any with 7 digits. It is mahogany or walnut, Pearl or white abalone inlays in fret board (26) and inlays on the split diamond and Gibson name logo(they are a golden color). It has 3 humbucking pickups that look like nickle with gold overlay and the same with the tunematic bridge. Small half bat wing pickguard on one side...layerd black/white/black/white. Any Info would be appreciated....I found a 74 that looks like it but it had SG Custom on the truss rod cover....ours doesn't...it just has the S-G ? Value???

also A 1981 Ovation acoustic/electric 12 string # 234191 It has all the inlays and abalone trim....Beautiful Wonderful Guitar. Thanks for the help!

ANSWER

Hi, Dances with Horses--

I spent MUCH time searching for the SG to no avail. The serial number came up as "unrecognized", but I looked at every SG model made by Gibson.

The problem is that the custom shop SG's are the closest match, but the manufacture date is after 1990 and yours coes not have the typical custom shop serial number.

Of the other SG's, I could find nothing with 3 humbuckers, 4 knobs, and that shape of pickguard, especially with the black layer on top.

So--I have to tell you that I don't know. Maybe you need to take it to an evaluator and find out if it IS a Gibson.

Or maybe one of my readers will have some other ideas. Sorry I could not be of more help.

The Ovation--

I have no way of matching up a guitar without a model name or number. The serial number does not indicate model.

Best Wishes,
Lynne

SG Custom
by: David

That pic looks EXACTLY like my 74 SG Custom. I removed the white paint job (ugh!) and redid it with clear poly. If I didn't know better, I'd think you had my guitar, Emma!
Anyway, not sure about the serial number, but I think the Truss Rod cover that just reads SG may be a replacement.

9 digit handwritten Epiphone Serial Number
by: Anonymous

I have an Epiphone Emperor II jazz box wiyh a handwritten 9 digit serial number inside the guitar, written with a black marking pen.

No label in the guitar.

No numbers on back of the headstock.

No model number anywhere.

The trussrod cover has 3 screws and says Gibson, in vertical lettering.

Typical Epiphone Tree of LIfe headstock.

Gibson half-heartedly identified it as a 1989 pre-Joe Pass Emperor, but they also say they have no record of the serial number?

My own research reveals that it was possibly made in the Matsumoko factory in Japan, because it has
a Matsumoko trademark, which is a 3 piece maple neck, with the center piece grain running 90 degrees to the 2 side pieces.

Any ideas out there?
Thanks

Stumped
by: Dances with Horses

Thanks Lynn,
I screwed up on the inlay amount on the SG (not 26) as you can see....that is the Ovation with 26...I found out the Ovation is a 1981 model. The SG has me stumped ....I emailed Gibson so hopefully they can tell me more. I had a friend who told me it was a 76 hand made by a master luthier thus the 7 digit serial #....he said he had a 68 that had a 7 digit # because it was custom made by a luthier also....so.....Hopefully Gibson will know! I know their numbering system was really screwed up at one time. I also found a 74 that looks identical but it has S-G 'Custom' on the truss rod cover. Very frustrating for sure.
I am thinking of taking off one of the pickups and checking it for a year or some clue. Thank You so much for trying to help.
Peace
Leisa
