Is this a good model or does it require tinkering to get first class sound out of it?

Of course, it depends upon the sound that you want, but I am an avid Les Paul fan. This guitar was manufactured in 1997 (according to the serial number), so it has 2 covered humbuckers (´57 Classic/´97 Classic). The humbuckers tend to have a mellower sound than single coil pickups. If the mellow Gibson sound is what you are after, then I don't see how you could go wrong with this guitar.
