Gibson L7

Hi,

My aunt recently gave me her Gibson L7 number 248 and I was wondering if you could give me an approximate value. Also, can you recommend a good book / web site to read for the history of the Gibson guitar?

Thanks,
Susan

ANSWER

Hi, Susan--

Here is the Blue Book general info about the L7:

"L-7
- arched spruce top, f-holes, raised bound black pickguard, bound body, carved maple back/sides, mahogany neck, 14/19-fret bound rosewood fingerboard with pearl multi-design inlay, adjustable rosewood bridge/trapeze tailpiece, bound blackface peghead with pearl fleur-de-lis/logo inlay, three-per-side tuners with plastic buttons, available in Natural or Sunburst (most common) finish, 16 or 17 in. body, approx. 1,200 mfg. 1932-1956."

I don't think the "248" is the serial number, for that would indicate a 1902 manufacture date. So, without a serial number, I cannot determine when the guitar was manufactured and therefore cannot be specific as to the possible value.

Most likely, it falls into one of the following date categories--maybe your Aunt would know.

1943-1949
Excellent $2,500 - 3,000
Average $1,650 - 2,000

1950-1956
$2,300 - 2,750
$1,600 - 1,900

As far as Gibson History, try History of Gibson Guitars. It is a very informative article.

Best Wishes,
Lynne
