by malick laifa
(London, UK)

Hi, i am trying to buy this guitar but i want to make sure is an original and authentic. This guitar named above is reddish colour and it have mahogany neck and also have a serial number behind the neck it is belong to a dealer and through the internet it says 100% original. As i am not sure of the authenticity of the guitar what kind of questions should i ask the dealer? and what should i look for? please help, thank you.

Hi, Malick--

You could make sure that the guitar matches these specs: (from the Blue Book)

DOVE
- slope shouldered body, spruce top, round soundhole, tortoiseshell pickguard with dove inlay, three-stripe bound body/rosette, figured maple back/sides, 14/20-fret bound rosewood fingerboard with pearl parallelogram inlay, enlarged rosewood bridge with black pearl dot pins, pearl dove inlay on bridge wings, blackface peghead with pearl plant/logo inlay, three-per-side gold tuners with pearl buttons, available in Natural or Antique Cherry finish.

Here is the Blue Book pricing for 1975:

Excellent $2,000 - 2,500
Average $1,000 - 1,200

If you can get the serial number from the Dealer, you can send it to me and I will check the year of manufacture.

Best Wishes,
Lynne

1975 Gibson Dove
by: malick laifa

hi,

i wrote to you before regarding this guitar you asked me for the serial number, here it is: 99158573 can you tell me also if the wood of this guitar would sound good for the year of manufacture. Thanks.

Hi, Malick--

The serial number indicates a 1975 manufacture date.

Here is the Blue Book info:

DOVE
- slope shouldered body, spruce top, round soundhole, tortoiseshell pickguard with dove inlay, three-stripe bound body/rosette, figured maple back/sides, 14/20-fret bound rosewood fingerboard with pearl parallelogram inlay, enlarged rosewood bridge with black pearl dot pins, pearl dove inlay on bridge wings, blackface peghead with pearl plant/logo inlay, three-per-side gold tuners with pearl buttons, available in Natural or Antique Cherry finish, mfg. 1962-1996.

Here is the pricing info:

1970-1984
Excellent $2,000 - 2,500
Average$1,000 - 1,200

I see no reason why the guitar would not sound good--as far as the type of wood is concerned.

Best Wishes,
Lynne
