Fender Stratocaster 1979 / 80?

by Tony DeStefano
(Hackettstown, NJ)

SN S 936427 The grain is visible through a candy apple kind of red finish (it may in fact not be called candy apple at Fender) It has an EBONY fretboard, the CBS era large headstock, the three bolt neck, the five position switch and the large through neck adjustment protruding from the neck to the headstock.

Stan the man from Mandolin Brothers of Staten Island placed the manufacture date as Late 1979 to early 1980 according to the bibles he had available.

ANSWER

Hi, Tony--

All of the information I can find indicates NO ebony necks on these guitars. Is it possible that the neck has been replaced? The candy apple finish did not become available until 1983--but those guitars had the small headstock.

Otherwise, all of the description points to this in the Blue Book:

1978-1980

Mint $1,750
Exc.+ $1,400
Exc.$1,150
Avg.+ $950
Avg. $800
Exc. $650

This is a BEAUTIFUL guitar!

Lynne

Thank You Lynn!
by: Tony DeStefano

The neck is original! If that is rosewood I will eat a 1/4" phono plug! Did they use any other exotic wood which might appear to be eboby-esque?

ANSWER

The Blue Book says Rosewood or Maple. I did some research and found only "Showmasters" with ebony necks. Maybe you should contact the Fender company?
