Fender Precision Japan Bass

by Daphne
(Lancaster, England.)

Hi.

Please could you tell me how much my bass is worth? It is a metallic blue fender precision with a silver pickguard. On the base of the neck it says 'Made in Japan and has the serial number S000556. I bought the bass about twelve years ago from a pawn shop in Cambridge, England, so I have no idea of its history before I got it. It has a couple of scratches on the edges but it's in pretty good nick other than that. I don't know the year of manufacture, but if you can find that information from your magical blue book, I would really appreciate it.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Daphne

ANSWER

Hi, Daphne--

The serial number indicates that your guitar was made at the Fuji-gen Plant (for Fender Japan),Japan in 1994 - 1995.

Here is the Blue Book general info:

'50S PRECISION BASS (JAPAN MFG. NO. 027-1302)
- offset double cutaway basswood body, bolt-on maple neck, 20-fret maple fingerboard with black dot inlays, four-on-one-side tuners, fixed bridge, white pickguard, P-style exposed pickup, two knobs (v, tone), chrome hardware, available in Black, Candy Apple Red, Olympic White, Sonic Blue, or 3-Tone Sunburst finish, mfg. 1992-94.

The pricing info:

Mint $650
Exc.+ $550
Exc. $475
Avg.+ $400
Avg. $350
General $300

There is also this one:

'60S PRECISION BASS (JAPAN MFG. NO. 027-1300)
- offset double cutaway basswood body, bolt-on maple neck, 20-fret rosewood fingerboard with pearl dot inlays, four-on-one-side tuners, fixed bridge, white or tortoiseshell pickguard, single P-style exposed pickup, two knobs (v, tone), chrome hardware, available in Black, Candy Apple Red, Olympic White, Sonic Blue, or 3-Tone Sunburst finish, mfg. 1992-94.

The pricing info is exactly the same.

P Bass MIJ
by: dragon

After owning a made in USA Fender Precision bass, a Fender P bass "made in Japan" around 1995 comes along and presented itself as a fine, well constructed playing bass. It's true that no matter the brand, a guitar just has to have a soul. Luck had much to do with this find. I've tried and owned many but never found a bass that is as balanced as this. The Precision sound is something that can't be denied and lends itself for recording most any genre, but as with anything, you need to find the right one.

80's Fender Basses
by: Dan

For a time, the Jazz Special Fender Bass was made in Japan in
the 1980's....Duff McKagan plays one and Fender has made
a Duff model. Fender now makes a modern Jazz Special.

These are highly sought by some collectors.

Dan
