Fender Lead III

by Jason
(Casselberry FL)

My uncle several years back gave me a Fender Lead III 1982 as a present for my 25th birthday. I'm 30 years old now and haven't touched it since. I would rather it be used by someone that can appreciate it since its a unique and rare guitar. Its sunburst in color. On the back where it rests against you there is a fading away of the paint, however that is the guitar's only blemish.

ANSWER

Hi, Jason--

Here is the Blue Book info on your guitar:

Lead III (U.S. Mfg.)
- similar to the Lead I, except has a "Lead III" logo, two exposed humbucker pickups, two three-way switches that allow for seven various single coil and humbucker pickup options, mfg. 1979-1982.

Mint $550
Exc. +$475
exc. 400
Avg+ $325
Avg. $275
General $225

Looking for my long lost Lead III
by: StrungOutMusic

I had a Lead III back in 1982, bought new for about $250. Sold it in the late 80's and have regretted it ever since. I'm searching for another one and only now realize how much I regret letting it go.

If anyone has a black one they'd like to put up for sale please let me know. I'd be very interested in paying a fair price to have one back in my possession. It was a great guitar.

Thanks

Lead III
by: Anonymous

I've owned mine since new. Red sunburst, 2HB, rosewood, thin neck, black pickguard, excellent condition. I would never sell mine. However, they don't seem to be very popular. Mostly because Fender didn't make enough to build a fan base. Also because of there size they are considered a beginer's. Not my opinion. I've watched them on ebay repeatedly not sell. I have been tempted but even I do not want to pay much for them. I almost bought a Craigslister, lead I in great shape, thin neck, rosewood, but wimped out at $350.
I hope this helps. Probably not what you want to hear. I am currently looking for a Jackson/Charvel, neck-thru, but shoot me a pic I'd love to see it. tj409@hotmail.com.
I don't know if you can post here.
Take care.

another Lead III / 3
by: Phil

I also have a Lead III. Black with white pickboard, rosewood fretboard. It has a few dings but has apparently been played very little. I had a luthier take a look at it last year; he did a basic setup and replaced what I am assuming were the original strings with Fender nickel wound 150s and pronounced it in perfect playing condition. I am considering turning it loose into the market so I'd appreciate feedback on current value as of 4/2011.

Love my Lead III
by: Anonymous

I love my Fender Lead III. Bought it new in about 1982. White with rosewood fingerboard. The white finish has aged to a buttery cream color. Other than that it is in immaculate condition.

My lead lll
by: Anonymous

I bought an '82 lead lll in 1992 for $200 at a music store, in primo shape. Looked like it had hardly been played. This is the one they will have to "pry out of my cold dead fingers". I love this guitar and it ranks up with the best I have played. I am waiting for some "Star" to be seen with one and see if the market value shoots up as happened with Jimmy Page and the Dan Electro's. To be honest when you see junkers like Starcasters and other crappy Fender issues going for high dollar I have to wonder why the Lead's have not commanded higher prices. I'm looking to get a 1 and 11 for my collection. But I want them to be like my 3.

Loved this guitar
by: Anonymous

Hi,
I used to have a white one. This was the only guitar that I have ever missed after selling.
Also, this guitar was played by Rick O from the Cars.
Nice switching too.
(I kept the neck for some reason.)

Blue Book?
by: steve

The Blue Book value of an original American Made Fender Lead III is well over $550.00. I have a 1981 Fender Lead III (Black body, Maple neck) with an original patent pending "Floyd Rose" Kahler tremolo system. It was appraised at $3500.00. The tremolo system is not valued at $2950.00.

Hi, Steve--

I looked it up again in the Blue Book of Electric Guitars. It says $550. Your appraisal is higher than the Blue Book value. This could be due to several factors. In any case, the ACTUAL value of ANY guitar is just what someone will pay you for it.

It is a very nice guitar!

Lynne
