fender F-35

by Jenni
(Hill AFB, UT)

I have an older Fender model number F-35 serial number 7052739. I was wondering the value of it. It was played a handful of time by my dad back in the 80's and it's sat in it's case since then. There is no dings or scratches that I see. it even has original strings minus one.

ANSWER

Hi, Jenni--

Here is the Blue Book info:

F-35
- dreadnought style, spruce top, Ovangkol back and sides, mahogany neck, 14/20-fret rosewood fingerboard, adjustable rosewood bridge, black pickguard, Natural finish, 25.5 in. scale, mfg. 1972-1981.

Excellent $55 - 75
Average $25 - 35

I've had mine since 1979...it went to Germany with me, it went on the road with me, it has move with me to every house I have ever lived in...and now I'm an old geezer heading towards retirement :-0 Mine has a great mother of pearl inlaid pick guard and is still as premium as the day I picked it up....excellent tone...and it has been my friend throughout time on good and not so good days. I'd sell it to ya for...say, $5000.00 :-) nah...I wouldn't....

Predator Pawnheads
by: Dartek

Jenni and all, you gotta watch for the predator types that are out to off set what you know in your heart is an approximate value. These skeezers are willing to misrepresent the value to steal from their victims. The next day the scumbags put in their storefront for $600.00 and wouldn't sell for less than $450.00 and if you offered them the so-called book price they would throw you outta the store.

However these Fenders are not americana in the true sense. Fender outsourced a whole series of guitars in the 70's to avoid hand made american union wages and craftsmanship. Korean craftmanship was put to the test and prevailed. So .. a Fender Yes an American icon .. NO. A damn solid fine sounding box after 30+ years is my F35.

My Fender F-35
by: Durtworks

I have owned my Fender F-35 for 25 yrs now, and it still is in great condition. I play it all the time. I've taught numerous friends to play with my guitar, and they ended up buying ones just like it. I started playing when I gave up drum's, so I could impress women..lol. It still works after all these years..Stairway to Heaven is the best tune to play at parties, and then people think I'm a rock star..

Mine is a '79 which a coworker gave me a year ago. Fantastic guitar. The only problem us that someone drilled about a 1/2" hole in the side for a pickup, I assume, but it hasn't affected the sound that I can tell I haven't played in 20 years and this guitar inspired me to pickup where I left off. Very happy.

This Blue book value is crazy!!!!!

My 1979 F-35 is great!! Sweet sound , super warm tone . I have 11 guitars and i always go to my f-35!!
If you have a chance to buy one GRAB IT. I paid $200 at goodwill auction for mine, best $200 i ever spent. My ovations, Walden, Martin, and other s, do not compare to the easy playability to this guitar. It is mint, I call it my BABY!!
I will never sell this F-35!!!!!!!!

My F35 story
by: Dartek

I paid 300 at an auction in a small town east of Toronto. It is a 78 and came into Canada from a St. John's New Brunswick Music store called Moody the Music Man ltd. # 7802531

It was not listed as a fender quitar but simply a quality acoustic. I went to the auction and saw that it was a brand name fender. I didn't wanna draw attention or show eagerness. The bidding started at 300.00 no one wanted it .. I acted disinterested. 200 .. no .. 100?? okay Yes I'll pay 100 for that old thing. Then a mysterious slow climb went to 200 and now I wasn't sure about the model or anything. I never picked it up but was taking the risk. 300 going once ..etc. wow .. I got it .. the best acoustic I have handled. Rich, mellow, bright and sustain that sings. Great action too.

Wouldn't take a MILLION for mine
by: Anonymous

I was given this guitar by a girlfriend in 1976. She was killed a year later in a car wreck.

It was my first guitar and I still own it. I've had it now for about 35 years. For sentimental reasons, I'd never sell it. But sentiment aside, it really is a nice guitar, and over the years the tone has mellowed and improved.

Don't sell yours. Laugh at the ridiculous blue book value and hang on to it.

I've owned at least two dozen guitars over the years, and have made some really stupid mistakes selling them. For example, when I was in law school and strapped for cash, I parted with a 54 Gibson ES335 and 60's Fender Precision Bass for next to nothing. I'm still regretting letting go of those guitars, not only because of the value they now hold, but because they were great guitars.

I now have two Stratocasters (56 custom shop acquired in 2001; early 80's Strat Plus), Les Paul Classic (1992), Sigma DR-7 (1973), Dan Electro (no idea how old), and various other basses and acoustics.

I'll never sell a guitar again, although I'll surely buy some more!

By the way, my Fender F-35 is still one of my favorite guitars to play. I don't know why, but I guess its just so familiar and has such a sweet tone to me.

Fender F-35
by: Wade Vän Hook

Hey, my dad gave me my grandmothers ol' Fender F-35 about a week ago. Its been treated very poorly, tuning machines are missing, the saddle is missing, and two pegs are gone. But regardless, i'm very excited that i will soon be able to play this guitar. It was given to my grandmother (Patsy Wade Van Hook) in the early 80's by the country musician George Petty. George would help babysit some of my cousins, and was over a good bit. one night him, my aunt, and my grandmother were sitting around drinking some cold ones while George strummed away. My aunt pointed out to George that Patsy was a bluegrass guitarist, and bassist (for a band called "The Lonesome Pines"), and George handed her the guitar. She played a few songs, and afterwards in total awe George signed and gave her the guitar saying that she was the greatest woman guitar play he had ever met. Sadly my Patsy passed away in 1996, and since then the guitar has be mistreated and badly abused. The guitar has alot of sentimental value, and i could never bring myself to sell it. hopefully one day i will pass it on to my children.

Don't know what it is ...
by: Dan

Got my F35 in 1978, serial # 7807961 as my first serious instrument.
I was 17 and learned a few chords from a friend that owned and played a Norman B50 back then.
The F35 was my first Fender experience and will not be the last. However, I will always keep this one.
Since I bought it, I would play the very few easy songs I knew on and off to relax.
I noticed that the more I played it, the better it sounded and beleived I was imagining it until I read other comments. It really gets alive and gains a richer sound as you play it.
I finally decided to take courses over a year ago after I fulfilled an old dream and bought an electric guitar.
When I bring my F35 for practice, my teacher simply cannot beleive how comfortable the fingerboard feels and how amazing the sound is.
I invested around 200$ on it this year for an overall tune-up, new strings and a decent pickup.
I still cannot beleive how well it sounds with Martin medium/light strings.
I don't know what it is, can't explain it, but I would not let go this guitar no matter what, weather its worth 75$ or 7500$.

Fender F35 mid 70's
by: Tom in Ohio

My father was a bit of a prodigy musician and his mother bought him a f35 from our local pawn shop for around $100 give or take. He died young (33yrs) in 1986 and I have had it ever since. I learn to play and have performed on stage with it. My uncle learned on it before getting a hummingbird. It is what I would call a work horse. I have just ordered a Ibanez a200 ambiance because I want a more flexible performance instrument but I will always love the old F35. I just hope the Ibanez sounds $300 richer in sound. My F35 has a good slap sound that I would relate to "Days of the new" or similar.

F-35 resurrected
by: Mike

Bought my F-35 (ser.No. 490521) in Vancouver about 1975(ish) It was a good first guitar and has been with me, in one way or another, ever since. It has had an exciting and at times dangerous life (so far). It almost floated away at high tide on Long Beach one year. It suffered a severe kicking one by a jealous girlfriend. It went to sea for weeks on a fishing boat in the Gulf of Carpentaria, It hitched around New Zealand in mid-winter. It was thrown out the window by (now ex) wife. It was accidently set on fire by a candle lit by my daughter and it spent 10 years in a box in a damp cellar until recently, when I resurrected it, cleaned it and restrung it. It is now my Number One guitar for practice, busking and acoustic gigs. Despite it's scarred, charred and battered appearance, I love this old guitar to death!

Fender F-35 Model Left Handed
by: Jim

I bought my Fender Left-handed Model F-35 back in the early 1980's, used, at a guitar shop in Lexington, KY. (Serial no. 8301232).

The Fender website at: http://www.fender.com/support/acoustics.php states the following:

" Model:F35, Years: 1972-1981. MSRP: $215, Materials: Spruce top, obankole back and sides."

By the way, the older the guitars on this site are, the higher the price. They are asking those high prices, because people are paying those prices for them. Hold on to what you have....."A piece of American history and culture, that will never be repeated again."

Check out their site. You might just find you guitar listed there. I did.

Peace.........

I have a 73' F-35 I bought on Ebay for $---, and I spent $75 getting it professionally set-up by Anthony Stoddard (a really great Luther), so I guess I'm dumb by spending more for the set-up than the "book" says it is worth. However, in A.S.'s opinion the properly set-up F-35 is far better in tone and playability than his 1960's Martin D-35. I think I trust his opinion more than the "book".
(dya notice that there is not 1 bad comment about the F-35 ... search the net, and you will find everyone who has one "knows" what it is really worth)

by: Anonymous

I have one of the first F-35's made in 1972 which I purchased new, the serial number is 8. I would not take a Martin D-35 in trade for it.

I have auditioned many guitars as replacements and have not found one that I would consider an improvement even amoungst those costing many thousands of dollars.

Over the past 38 years it has only improved in its tone and sustain even though it has not seen the best of care.

My sister wants it as do my children so I have a tough decision as to making a specific bequest of this in my will.

If you are a player then keep it. If you decide to pass it on please make sure it goes to a player that will appreciate it for what it truely is and not view it as a dollar value based on some monetary review.

Fender F-35. The best
by: Anonymous

I bought mine new in 79 and have played it ever since. It has great tuning pegs that have held their tune throughout long performances. Even outdoors in the evening. The neck is perfect for my hand and I just love the action and ringing tone. No warping. Lots of people have commented on the sound and action. I use the Elixer super light strings and it produces a sound similar to my Yamaki 12 string. I was so lucky as I remember looking at a number of martins and guilds at the time. Quite frankly I like my fender better. Friends of mine who are much finer guitarists than me really enjoy picking it up to play. They seem surprised as this was their first acoustic fender experience. Keep it play it enjoy it. I love this guitar.

Ask any musician that owns one and the first thing you will hear ia a laughter, and the last thing you will hear is them cursing that book, and in between you will hear how great this guitar truly is, and their own story of how that F-35 has touched their life, $75? Fender Japanese F series Acoustics
by: Anonymous

I have an early 80's Fender F75, very similar with built in bridge pickup and only one knob on the side. The solid spruce top and wood combinations on these guitars are amazing. Japan built some amazing guitars back then, like my other acoustic. An Ibanez R400 Ragtime Special, Japan 1981-- Wow what a player.
Anyway...I digress...The Fender F series acoustics are wonderful.

That bluebook value is a bunch of garbage. Go see what $75 will buy you for an acoustic.
Times are hard but I wouldn't sell mine for $300.

Over the years it's taken a few dings, but there's something about it when you play it that keeps you wanting more.
Pretty well made, and nice sound,I use a Takamine as well, but the fender has that lovely vintage feel and look.
Worth a lot more than you would probably get for it. My advice is, if one comes up for sale buy it!

I own a 79 F-35 and play it more than my Yairi & Breedlove and I like it more than the D-35s I've played. It may be just the aged spruce and the heavily V'ed neck, but it's my favorite of my twenty some guitars (& the cheapest one, too! go figure) I would say a fair price would be about 300 bucks. F-35 ... Great Guitar!

I have a Fender F-35 which was bought second hand by my father in the late 70's / early 80's and appraised shortly after at $800 (CAN). He had passed it on to me in the late 90's and I have not played a guitar since that could touch it in sound and playabilitly (Elixr poly web lights work great for me). The guitar has seen many parties and has been played alongside Gibsons, Martins and Tak's of all years and models and has drowned out each and everyone of them ... and has always been commented on for it!
I would not trade or sell this guitar for anything to be completely honest!

Too good to sell
by: Anonymous

I bought my F 35 acoustic secondhand about twenty years ago for $330 Australian with no case. It has a beautiful mellow bright sound and I have lowered the strings both at the bridge and nut because it was a bit heavy to play. Now it is so light and effortless and the harmonics are spot on. The build quality and finish is excellent. I also fitted a piezo pickup under the saddle for amplification without it altering the sound. Over the years I have considered replacing it with a Maton or another quality instrument but even after spending 2 or 3 grand there would be little or no improvement in sound over my F35.So I have decided to keep it.
