Epiphone PR-715-ASB

Hi,

I just purchased this guitar on Craigslist on Maui for $150. The serial number is: 83733 and it's showing 'Made in Japan'. The original owner bought it many years ago (he thinks 20) and it has been in storage ever since. The pickguard is pretty much brand new, zero bellying/bulging near the bridge, and some horizontal fading on the finish on the back. There is some discoloration on the frets, but besides that it looks like it was purchased new and stored away until this morning.

I posted 4 pictures here: http://www.lemurian.info/epiphone/

I couldn't find much online about this guitar. I did find one review on harmony central and it had these specs:

Dreadnought, Spruce Top, Rosewood back & sides, Herringbone body binding, Mahogany neck, Dot Inlay, Rosewood Fingerboard, 251/2" scale,
Chrome hardward (made in 1991)

http://reviews.harmony-central.com/reviews/Acoustic+Guitar/product/Epiphone/PR-715/10/1

The action is pretty low, bass is non-existent, mids are nice, and the highs are a little over powering. I have a nice '89 Martin D-28 that I usually play in controlled environments and was looking for a 'beater' guitar.

Any info (price/specis/etc.) that you might have would be very helpful!

Aloha,

--Marc

ANSWER

Hi, Marc--

Thanks for the generous donation! The Blue Book DOES list your guitar. The ASB stands for Antique Sunburst finish. Here is the Blue Book general info:

PR-715
- dreadnought-style body, laminated spruce top, two-piece bookmatched rosewood back, rosewood sides, round soundhole with herringbone rosette, brown herringbone top binding/inlay, one-piece mahogany neck, 14/20-fret rosewood fingerboard with dot inlays, scripted Epiphone logo on headstock, three-per-side chrome tuners, rosewood bridge, available in Antique Cherry Sunburst, Antique Sunburst, or Natural finish, mfg. 1981-mid-1980s.

The serial number search came up as "unrecognized". But I think that might be because until 2004 some models were made in Korea.

The Pricing info:

Excellent $175 - 225
Average $110 - 140

It looks like you got a good deal! Hope this helps...

Lynne

I bought a PR-715 N. It came with original hard shell case. Of all used guitars in the store, this one sounded the best. Truly sounds like an all solid wood guitar. I bought is as a beater as well, but thinking about installing electronics.

I bought my Epiphone PR 715 w/inlay (abolone I think) Epiphone logo, many years ago(17 years), used $150...what a bargain, like you, I bought the guitar as a beach/beater, around the campfire instrument, bought this guitar about 2 years after I dinged my Martin D35...love the guitar PR 715, just restrung to, sound good...can't go wrong here, the PR 715 is a great value instrument if you can find one in decent condition it's worth the price.
