Eko Ranger 6

by matt
(england)

I have an old Eko Ranger with the black "batwing" scratchplate. Its made in Italy. The label is in gold and states that it is a Range 6. It has the bolt on neck. I think the fretboard and bridge are rosewood. The bridge is adjustable by screws. The machine heads let it down as these are cheap omne with white plastic knobs. The guitar is in excellent condition. i am not sure of its year but I'm guessing it is early 1970's vintage. Any thoughts on value? I don't think its worth much but it plays well and in England at least, they are becoming quite collectable.

Rgds,

Matt

ANSWER

Hi, Matt--

The Blue Book says:

RANGER 6
- dreadnought style, Gibson Hummingbird/Dove style pickguard, dot inlay, natural finish, mfg. 1967-early 1980s.

Excellent $300 - 350

Average $150 - 200

That said, remember that the ULTIMATE "value" of a guitar is what someone will pay for it. This is in great part dependent upon demand. Since demand differs among geographical areas, your guitar may well be worth more than that.

Here is a link to a discussion by Eko Ranger owners--many from GB.

not a ranger?
by: Anonymous

Hi I live in the the USA so there is not as much interest probably because they aren't many. I was given an Eko AW/12-n by a friend through long stories. Anyway she was played and put away and started showing abuse ,the bridge started pulling away and the soundboard crazed ( cracked) so I removed the bridge, sanded the soundboard ,reglued the bridge and shimmed the neck to body w/ 3 mil mylar now she plays great looks sad in a nice way and FUNctional. Any info is appreciated. Thanx DanL

Play it...
by: Cornypomp

I bought my first EKO in 1967.. She was sat in the window of an old music shop in the seedy part of town (Camberley, Surrey)asking £23 second-hand. I must have walked past that shop a hundred times, lusting on each passing. Eventually I persuaded my dear old mum to lend me the money to buy it. £23 was a lot of money back then, it was my mums rainy day savings but she lent it to me...bless her. The rest is history, that guitar has been everywhere with me. She's been forgotten, stored, lost, and played one hell of a lot. As I type this the guitar is sat right in front of me, I've just been playing it.

Still got a great action and tone for what is really a low end guitar..let's not kid ourselves. But would I let it go, no way. Apart from the sentimental value it's a great guitar and I make music on it. Making music makes me happy, you can't put a value on that. Play it...you know it makes sense :-)

got a 1964 ranger E6
by: elliott

Ive got a 1964 Eko Ranger E6. Its still got the serial number on it. just wondering how much its worth, because most others ive seen valued on the internet are all 1970's. theres no damage apart from one small scratch on the back of the body (probably from a belt). I'd really appreciate some help valuing it.
Thanks Everyone
Elliott

my vintage Eko
by: Moebius

I have an old ranger 6 whic i bought from a mate in UK some 30+ years ago. Apart from some wrinkles in the laquer, it sounds great and still has a very low action (use medium gauge steel/bronze). I walked into a 2nd hand music store one day and found a case which fitted like a glove
Quite honestly, you wouldn't go past one of these guys - for any type of style.
Just thinking about whether a semi-acoustic pickup will be worth trying - your thoughts anyone?

Eko Love affairs
by: Jeff

I had one many years ago. when I shifted some 1200 miles south to Brisbane Australia, I found that the glues slowly let go. I was devastated. I was the very first thing that I had bought with my own money after starting work as a teenager.
It is one of the great dreadnoughts ever made.
I you want to sell it let me know.

What's it worth, well that depends on weather the buyer has ever played one.
There is not much better a guitar than the Eko ranger E6 or E12

1973 EKO Ranger 6
by: Anonymous

Recently bought my 1973 Ranger for $400 USD. IS in perfect shape, all original. AS you know this thing is real heavy. Very mellow when not plugged in, but as an acoustic/electric works wonderfully for my needs.

After an hour on stage you'll feel the weight of this guy.

the best
by: geoff

have owned eko ranger 6 from new, purchased in New Zealand, 1974.It is an amazing guitar.am on 3rd set of machine heads.and it has suffered some bad knocks.Nome of the damage has required repair,as its built like a brick outhouse and heavy.Frets have been planed, and it sounds better than when i bought it.All my friends enjoy playing it.and i have a shadow humbucker pickup in the sound hole.I use a marshall dfx 50 combo amp,and it performs as an amplified acoustic on clean channel or as a solid electric on the dirty channel.I will be very sad when it wears out.It has been my best friend and mood stabiliser for a long time.If anyone finds one grab,I believe the ranger 6 is the best value vintage for money around.

The E and me...
by: Mike Gilchrist

I wandered into my local music shop yesterday primarily to escape the ghastly English weather and there it was, beckoning to me from its stand, seducing me with soft tones and blaa blaa.

Sounds like the script for a cheesy 'made for television' movie, doesn't it? That's my story to which I stick.Suffice to say,it makes a lousy guitar player like me sound not half bad. Bargain at £130.
