Do Toms Need Bottom Heads?

Do you have to have the skins on the bottom?

ANSWER

Hi, Ken--

There was a trend in the 70's of removing the bottom heads from Toms. While it is not absolutely necessary top have the bottom head, it is advisable for a couple of reasons:

1. The bottom head is an important factor in the tone of the tom. The bottom heads mare called "Resonator" heads because that is what they do--they resonate with the vibrations of the top batter heads and help to determine the overall tone of the TOm.

2. The heads and the hardware holding them on keep the tom from warping.
