Cimar SG Dot 1944

by Darren
(Madison, WI)

I'm unsure of the exact year it was made, but I reckon it to be sometime around 1976. I couldn't find a model number on the guitar, but, for a picture, go to www.vintage-ibanez-museum.de/cimar.htm and it matches up exactly with the SG Dot 1944. It's in very good shape, just a few light scratches and dings that you can't see unless you really examine it. It may be in the original hard-case, I certainly haven't changed it and I've had it for at least 25 years. I couldn't find a serial number, just a stamped metal plate that says "Made in Japan".

ANSWER

Hi, Darren--

The Blue Book says only this about Cimar guitars:

"Instruments previously built in Japan during the 1970s and 1980s.
Cimar produced good-to medium-quality guitars that featured similar versions of classic American designs, as well as some original and thinline hollowbody designs."

It appears that Hoshino Gakki ownede the Ibanez brand name, but not the Cimar brand name. Hoshino Gakki contracted Cimar to produce low end guitars based on Cimar guitar designs and the Cimar brand became associated with Ibanez.

Ibanez denies producing these guitars. In fact Ibanez was having its own lawsuit problems for reproducing Gibson and Fender designs.

All that said, I still could not find much information about pricing. I did find one that needed restoration that someone paid 180 Euro for--about $270. US Dollars.

I think that if you are wanting to sell the guitar, your best bet would be to seek out Ibanez collectors or Lawsuit Era collectors. After all, any guitar is worth just what someone will pay for it.

Sorry I could not find more specific pricing info.
