Carmencita by Hofner

by Sue
(Massachusetts)

Hi
I'm wondering if you can help me out - I bought this guitar at a flea market for $10.00 - its in pretty rough shape, but I purchased it as a craft project so that's ok for my purpose, but I decided I should make sure there is no value to it before I strip it down and destroy any worth it might have had as a guitar... My web searches on this model have proven virtually fruitless... As you can see from the pics, it has a label "Carmencita" on the inside and also on the peghead. On the back of the peghead, its stamped "Japan". Its imprinted inside with the numbers 6 9 10 (could be 8910 as its tough to read). There is no other brand on it at all. Its got MOP inlay and herringbone binding. When I picked it up, it has a mix of nylon and steel string, but I presume it's a nylon-string classical guitar (?) At any rate, if you can provide any info such as the year and manufacturer, I would be extremely grateful. I've deduced that Hofner makes a similar model, but there is no reference to this company on the guitar at all (or any other company). Am I correct in assuming this is a guitar with no real value?

Many thanks

Sue

ANSWER

Hi, Sue--

This is a classical guitar made for Hofner. This is their low end series--starter guitars. The guitar is likely less than 25 years old.

There is no public information about serial numbers for these guitars, but if you contact Hofner, they may be able to help you. Here is mthe contact info:

USA / Canada
Classic Musical Instruments (CMI)
PO Box 580713
Pleasant Prairie, WI 58158
Phone: +1-888-942-2642 or 262-942-4811
Fax: +1-262-671-4280
E-mail Guitars: rob.olsen@hofner.com

Offhand, I would say that the guitar, especially since it is not in very good condition, would make a great craft project but is not a valuable guitar.

Lynne

Carmencita guitar
by: Crystal

It looks like there a lot of people looking for info on Carmencitas, including myself. I have a Spanish made Carmencita, modelo T-3, serial # 1(or7)528. Its hand written so its hard to tell what that first number was. I do not want to sell it, bit I am curious as to what its worth and any kind of history behind the guitar. I can't find anything much about them on the internet. Thnks

put some strings on it and play that motherfucker...............that unknown guitar is still my favorite

Kent Carmencita
by: Carlos Bravos

Si! I bought my Kent Carmencita in 1966 from a fellow high schooler and still have it! I have painted it, taken off the paint, put pickups on it, taken the pickups off, put steel strings on it and taken the steel strings off. The neck was at one time coming off the body and I epoxied it back on. It is a real sweetheart. I love my carmencita.

yeah mine is stamped japan as well............and out of 15 or so(at my last count) it's still my favorite. If I have a gig that involves just me and a guitar you better believe it's the old Carmencita coming with me. I'm almost tired of using mic's to amplify it and have looked into different styles of pickups but I say fuck-it.......you'll never hear the true beauty out of this beast unless it's mic'd

yeah Marco.........I took it upon myself(not being an expert in woodworking, but knowing enough) to try and fix this things vital parts...it is my favorite guitar out of around 15 at my last count. If I'm doing a gig that's just me and a guitar you better believe it's my Carmencita I'm taking with me, and you're right the mystery surrounding this brand makes it all the better. I'm just glad there are others out there that have found the beauty out of this beast.

Nice sounding...
by: Marco

I was just given a Carmencita stamped Japan on the headstock, no serial number inside. I contacted Hofner, and they said it is not theirs.
This guitar should have been tossed in the trash, but being pretty good at woodworking, I set out to repair the bridge, refasten the neck to the body, fix the separations in the body areas that were coming apart, and reinforce the whole instrument.
This guitar has had a huge history, and has been a part of something good, I can feel it.
As of now, it is my favorite guitar. The sound with the new EJ 32 D'Addario folk nylons I attached to it, is no short of amazing. I just wish I could find out more info, but if it remains a mystery, so be it. it will be a part of the mystique surrounding this living instrument.

String it up and play it!
by: Cody

I have a pretty identical guitar I bought for $10 myself.......no serial numbers on it at all except for the paper on the inside that says Carmencita. It had steel strings on it for some unknown reason when I bought it(which had caused some bridge warping damage with the extra tension) I've had it for around 10 years now and it sounds better everyday.

Carmencita Classical Guitar
by: Mike Johnson

I don't think that this is the Hofner guitar that some of you are describing. I have one that is identical to the one pictured, except the headstock is not completely shown in this picture. The label inside the body is identical. The serial number stamp above the label is 8 11 29. There is lots of binding and mother of pearl inlays including 20 w shaped inlays around the sound hole. I'm not done researching this guitar, but I don't think it's very valuable or rare or old. It may be worth stringing up and playing it, rather than strip the finish and use it as a arts and crafts wall hanging. You will find a better candidate at your next flea market or garage sale.

My Carmencita
by: Buzzard

I have a Carmencita guitar that was my fathers. The guitar was handed down to him from his father. He said he always remembered his dad having it around. Considering he was born in 1927, I figure the guitar is from late 20's to very early 30's at the newest. It is still one of the sweetest sounding classical guitars I have ever heard or played.

Another Carmencita from Oz
by: Chris

I bought my Carmencita - made in Japan - from Allens in Adelaide 1966 at a ridiculously low price. It has been around the world with me & looks a little battered now, but still has a lovely tone and was a first instrument for two of my sons. Probably not valuable in money terms but judging by my experience & what others say here, it is possible to get really good low end guitar. Enjoy yours!

carmencita
by: jenny

I bought mine for $20 at a garage sale at Lennox Head 25 years ago. I only just decided to check it out as I found the label floating around the innards!I have had many others but this is my 'camp' guitar tht i take anywhere and everywhere. It has a good action and lovely tone and only a slight buzz at times. It is made in japan and though I am looking for another guitar, this will always be my old fav.

News from Downunder

Hi Sue,

I also have a Carmencita guitar looking and sounding as if it's just like yours. I got it pretty much for peanuts in 1964, slightly used, so don't know what its new price was. I have never known anything about the brand until I googled "Carmencita guitar" just now. But you might like to know that it's the nicest nylon guitar I have ever played (not a large field I have to admit) and everyone who has ever played it has made a similar comment; it's to do with the neck - it's very nice. So don't botch that restoration!
