Atlas Sterling AE 252 Hollow Body Gretsch-like Electric

Atlas Sterling AE 252 AE 252 Body AE 252 switches and knobs AE 252 Headstock - Sterling logo worn off

i just inherited an Atlas AE 252 Hollow Body guitar. Looks to be about a 1967 model. Atlas Guitars came from a company from Hicksville, Long Island NY, but made in Japan.

I cannot find anything about this guitar, although I have found some anecdotal information regarding other Atlas Sterling guitars that were discovered, restored and thought to be "beautifully sounding guitars, very well made."

I haven't touched it yet. I want to know what I a working with, and whether I want to keep for my own playing, or maybe restore for sale.

Anyone have any idea at all about this guitar and the company who imported it, and the company in Japan who manufactured it?

I sure would appreciate any info!

thanks!

Atlas Acoustic model D-466
by: Anonymous

I had a friend purchase an acoustic guitar for me in 1976. It was purchased in NY - Atlas D-466 Aquarius serial # 22437 made in Japan. It has been a great guitar with a beautiful sound. I would love to know the value and any other information on the company.

My Sterling/Atlas D-212
by: Anonymous

I bought my Sterling/Atlas D-212 at Viner's Music Store in Bangor, Maine in the early seventies for around $300.00. It was used, but I chose it over a new Yamaha because I liked the sound and action better. People I know with a good ear have told me that they can't believe the sound of an inexpensive guitar like this.

I had a $1,000.00 Martin, but I sold it and kept this.

I have this same exact guitar in my room. I know nothing about it either, my father had gotten it a long time ago, but so long ago he doesn't remember anything but buying it in New York. I hope you find more about it!

Atlas Guitar info
by: Anonymous

I have a Sterling Atlas D-212 acoustio that I found in a pawn shop. I read somewhere on the net that RCA Studio's commissioned Sterling of Hicksville NY to build these guitars. Not sure if they were ever sold on the open market, I doubt they were based on how very little information there is on this company. My D-212 is just like a Martin....and cost me $200.00
