ASPEN - Strat Knock Off

ASPEN - Strat Knock Off

ASPEN - Strat Knock Off

ASPEN - Strat Knock Off ASPEN - Strat Knock Off ASPEN - Strat Knock Off ASPEN - Strat Knock Off

Okay, I came into possession of a mid-70's Aspen guitar the other day. It's in pretty solid shape, and works! It also came with it's original case.

Before I tear it down, re-paint it, build it back up, and give to my grand-daughter for her guitar lessons, is it worth anything? Better yet, I am not messing with something that should be sent to a museum, or anything like that, am I?

Also, I can't find the Serial number? Would you have any ideas on where it might be?

I have searched the internet for a couple of days, but only found out that is was made by International Music Corporation (IMC), of Fort Worth, Texas. It was made in Japan, and is a solid body. Other than that, I don't know much about it?

Any info you could send, as well as the (approx) value would be appreiciated!

Thanks,
Tred Kansas City, KS

ANSWER

Hi, Tred--

The Blue Book does not list Aspen Electric Guitars. This normally indicates that the guitars are not in any appreciable demand by collectors.

You can expect that this guitar would bring a price between $50 and $150 if you wanted to sell it.

I would say that it would be a perfect candidate for a fix-up and your granddaughter's first guitar.

TOO LATE!
by: Anonymous

Just to update everyone...

Frisky Dean - I tore this thing apart, just before winter set in. Someone had spilled a Coke on it? The pickups were coated in sticky syrup, and so was the route out area. I ordered a prewired BLUE pearloid pickguard with stock alanico pickups.

The weight is what really concerned me, just over 13lbs. I think the lamination glue is heavier than the wood! I have sanded it down, in my spare time. Will paint it soon as our weather gets better here in the K.C. area.

I drug my feet painting it, thinking anyday, the weather would get nasty. It doesn't look like that's gonna happen! So, when the temps stay above 75* for a few days, I'll paint.

There are a lot of nicks & dings in the body. I am going with a WHITE body when I repaint. I have worked on the neck & frets, but otherwise I haven't touched the finish, or decal.

Later,
Tred

Hey Tred,I inherited an aspen Strat about 15 years ago,I wouldn,t recommend doing anything with just give it to her and let her enjoy it.I would not even consider selling mine.they are very well made, and not many of them around.

Not So Fast!
by: Anonymous

I wouldn't be so quick to tear that Aspen apart. In the late 70's early 80's the Strat nock-offs made in Japan were often produced with greater care and precision than American Made Fender guitars. So well made in fact that Don Shultz, then President of Fender recognized that as a fact and shut production down in the US temporarily until he could re-tool domestic manufacturing to match the quality of the instruments from overseas.
